Life vs. competitiveness… Mobile carriers in different position on 5G frequency total volume restriction

Five-generation mobile communications (5G) frequency auction drafts have been released, and there has been a gap between the two companies with the decision to make a "total capacity". Regardless of how the government decides on the total amount of the system, it is inevitable that the company`s opposition is inevitable.

According to the industry on April 23, SKT, KT, and LG U+ desire 120 ㎒, 100 ㎒ and 100 ㎒ respectively while the government releases frequencies from the 3.5GHz band, which is the nationwide 5G band, to 280 ㎓. Assignment is difficult to avoid. It is pointed out that any alternative of the total amount can be used to influence the viability and competitiveness of the 5G business.

The Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) issued three alternatives for the total amount system. In case of 3.5GHz, the bandwidth of 100MHz is 37% of the total bandwidth, 110Hz is 40% and 120Hz is 43%. The Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) excluded the 90MHz bandwidth, which is a 33% level that can equally divide the total 280㎒ bandwidth. In contrast, in order to prevent the occurrence of unregistered operators, the upper limit was set at 120MHz, which is 43%, excluding the 50MHz bandwidth of 140MHz. The worst combination is solved to avoid.

KT and LG U+, excluding SK Telecom, point out that the total bandwidth of 120MHz is a matter of survival for the 5G industry. If SK Telecom secures 120MHz bandwidth as planned, it will be able to divide 120-100-60㎒. The reason for this is that it is difficult to provide 5G service because 5G cannot speed up than LTE at less than 80MHz. "SK Telecom has never taken the desired band in frequency auction so far," said Lee Soon-yong, managing director of KT, on the 19th. "In order to provide 1.4Gbps with 5G frequency, The worst comes when some operators take 60MHz. " LG U +, a lecturer at LG Electronics, said, "If we use the term `broadband` in this frequency allocation, if the total amount is 120MHz or 110㎒ (three carriers), it is 110-110-60MHz. I have never heard of him. "

In this regard, the government believes that the frequency range of 34 ~ 50 ㎒ is enough for LTE or higher quality. "The 60 to 80 MHz only has enough traffic to be able to digest, and it is enough to consider the requirements of the standard organization," said the spokesperson of the Ministry of Information and Communication.

SK Telecom believes that 120MHz + Alpha is necessary for 5G competitiveness. SK Telecom executive director Lim Hyung-soo said, "We need to focus on what kind of frequency environment we should be able to service the 5G that we dream of and supply enough frequency to accommodate the traffic." " We estimate that a bandwidth of more than 120MHz is required, which is the peak of the total amount. " "We are not limiting the 120 MHz band but rather announcing an additional 5G frequency supply plan that can accommodate more traffic and considering a way to allow more bandwidth instead of a gross margin, "He said.

The Korean government plans to make a final decision on this alternative in early May. However, the interests of the operators are so sharp that they have to worry about the last minute.
