Job guarantee & welfare cut in negotiation¡¦ GM Korea in painful labor negotiation

GM Korea¡¯s Labor Union has agreed on wage and collective bargaining this year, which it has taken about 80 days. GM Korea, meanwhile, avoided the catastrophic failure of court administration and negotiated with the government to normalize management.

The labor and management agreed on a big deal on the employment issue at the Gunsan plant, which was the biggest issue during the negotiations. On April 23, negotiations will be held on the detailed items related to cuts in welfare and healthcare costs of about KRW 100 billion and the agreement was drafted beyond four o`clock in the afternoon.

On the same day, GM Korea labor union leaders held a negotiation last night at 5:00 am after finding a compromise on employment security and new car assignment for about 680 workers at Gunsan plant. The labor union began to struggle with the dialogue, seeking a compromise in the issue of guaranteeing employment for workers at the Gunsan plant, which had the biggest disagreements. The labor union stepped back one step.

The company had originally planned to retire from the factory at Gunsan factory and put 100 people in Bupyeong and Changwon factories. The rest of the workers suggested that they would take 5 years unpaid leave. Since then, the unemployment rate has been reduced to four years, but the period has been so long that it is virtually fired. The company has reached a consensus while issuing amendments to reschedule and convert to voluntary retirement without enforcing unpaid leave. The union also insisted that the closure of the Gunsan factory be closed after the closure of the Gunsan plant on February 13.

The discussion on the future development plan of the company since the settlement of the workers problem at Gunsan factory was reached within a relatively short time frame. The labor union will organize a special committee for the Bupyeong 2 plant to make mutual efforts to secure the production volume of subsequent new cars to replace Malibu after 2022.

Labor and management repeated the opening of the bargaining and the opening session to the last minute for the welfare expenses such as the reservation of the payment of the child`s school expenses. The company offered to reduce the welfare welfare of KRW 100 billion such as reduction of allowance for unused annual vacation and reservation for 3 years of school expenses for children. In response, the union responded by claiming that school expenses could be a big burden on the family.

Labor tug-of-war over tuition fees remained at around 5 pm one of the court`s administrative deadlines. In the end, the labor and management agreed to freeze wages and pay incentives. The amendment of the collective agreement has agreed to reduce the cost of certain benefits such as legal leave, bonus payment methods, and tuition fees.

The board of directors of GM Korea, as the labor and management agreed on a provisional settlement of the day, the issue has been closed at 8 p.m.
