Google YouTube has recently been blocking so called ¡®fake news¡¯ that is causing social controversy.
It has now decided to participate in the `fake news reporting center` of the Korea Internet Autonomy Policy Organization (KISO), which starts service next month. It means that KISO will remove the post that it verified as fake news from the YouTube service.
According to KISO on April 8, a YouTube policy coordinator at Google Korea announced this plan to KISO earlier this month, and KISO, Google Korea and Google headquarters are in talks to confirm this plan.
A KISO representative said, "A YouTube policy officer at Google Korea has told KISO to join the fake news reporting center first." Google Korea is discussing with its headquarters because it is necessary to change the terms of use of YouTube. The representative said, "The report center is trying to prevent the spread of fake news by allowing the fake news that is circulating on the Internet to be deleted promptly. Therefore, not only KISO member companies but also foreign companies should actively participate to increase the effectiveness."
Meanwhile, a YouTube official at Google Korea confirmed that "we are in talks with the headquarters on the issue of participating in the fake news reporting center." YouTube has announced plans to respond to fake news in the United States.
It is the first time YouTube has decided to participate in a fake news reporting center. This is due to the growing controversy over socially fake news such as recent pitfalls and the controversy over fake news ahead of local elections in June. Especially, as the controversy between domestic Internet companies and foreign Internet companies has increased, the burden has increased and it is analyzed that KISO proposed to participate first.
Although YouTube has decided to go ahead with fake news exits like domestic operators, other overseas operators have yet to respond. According to KISO, there is no discussion with other operators such as Facebook in addition to YouTube.
On the other hand, KISO is expected to launch a fake news reporting center by opening its own homepage starting on the 1st of next month. The Center plans to report fraudulent postings on the Internet that are suspected of being fake news, and the third party will verify the fraud and deliver the results to the participating companies. The participant will then delete the post determined to be fake news. Currently, there are 10 KISO member companies including Naver, Kakao, SK Communications, Zoom Internet, Africa TV, and today`s humor.
Previously, KISO defined `fake postings in the form of articles that impersonate or hijacked the names of journalists or positions of journalists` as fake news last month and set up a `policy on false postings in the form of press reports` that can delete them. Naver and Kakao recently revised the Terms of Service to reflect this.
KISO has a group launched in 2009 by seven companies including NHN, Daum Communications, SK Communications, KTH, and Freechal as a member company to resolve the pending issues of the industry.
