[Digital Times, Kim Soo-yeon] Korean local animation companies that have been struggling to enter the Chinese market for one year as "Hallyu (Korean Wave)" are knocking on the Chinese market again. I will participate in the largest animation exhibition in China this month and plan to start a wave of Korean Wave.

According to the Korea Creative Content Agency on April 1, 21 animation planning, production and distribution companies will exhibit about 50 works at the Hangzhou Animation Festival 2018 held at Hangzhou White Horse Lake Plaza and First World Hotel in Hangzhou from April 25 to 27.

The Hangzhou Animation Festival is an event hosted by the China National Newspaper and the People`s Government of Zhejiang Province. Last year, 2,587 companies from 82 countries participated. The Chinese government is expanding its scale every year in order to raise this event to an Asian animation exhibition.

About 50 animations from 21 companies will participate in the exhibition, including RoboCapoli, CJ E & M`s Robot Train, and Young-Sik`s `Yabotbot`. KOCCA supports export consultation, promotion, and marketing of domestic animation companies participating. Last year, 27 domestic animation companies were scheduled to participate in the exhibition, but it was disappeared by the Han Chinese government. Recently, however, the Korean government has been liberalized in the atmosphere of reconciliation in the midst of the Korean-Chinese reconciliation.

Meanwhile, the industry expects the domestic animation company, which had stopped last year, to enter the Chinese market again with this exhibition. China has been limiting export of Korean cultural contents as one of the economic retaliatory measures following the deployment of the high-altitude missile defense system (THAAD) in the Korean peninsula since last year. The entry of Korean cultural products such as games, dramas, and animations into China has been very difficult.

It is known that Korean animation exports to China have been hit hard. According to the Korea Creative Content Agency, Korea`s animation exports last year are estimated at KRW 148.9 billion (USD 140 million), up 7.7 % from the previous year. China accounted for only 1.7% in 2017 (US USD 2.16 million) of all animation exports in Korea, and in 2017 it was said that the number of Korean animation exports also decreased.

The Chinese animation market is growing rapidly, and animation powerhouses such as Japan are building a joint venture, speeding up their entry into the country. According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper, the Chinese animation market last year was about 24 trillion won (150 billion yuan), three times more than in 2010.

An expert from a company participating in the event said, "This is the first time Korean animation companies have participated in the animation content market in mainland China after the participation of the Hangzhou Animation Festival last year." Although China is an important content export market, as the business became unclear, I could not find any business plan." "We hope that this event will enable us to resume business such as establishing local networking and signing new export contracts."
