The global TV market has been growing in the last three years. Especially, last year, Chinese domestic demand sharply decreased, and shipment of Chinese TV makers shrank by more than 10%.
According to market researcher IHS Markit, worldwide TV sales last year were 215.17 million units, a decrease of 3.3% from 2016, which has been 222.7 million units. World TV market sales have declined for the third consecutive year since 2014 when the number of units reached 234.92 million units.
Last year, demand in the Chinese market sharply declined and shipments of Chinese TV makers fell sharply. The Chinese TV market last year recorded 54 million units in volume, down 10.2% from the previous year, the largest decline ever recorded. China accounts for 25% of the world TV sales.
Shipments of major Chinese TV makers such as China`s TCL and Hyensen have declined due to the slump in the domestic market, In particular, Chinese makers have been focusing on low-end products rather than high-end TVs, and they have been hit with a direct hit by sluggish domestic demand.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which occupy the first and second places in the world TV market, are selling mainly in high-priced products, so they are not affected by the economy. Last year, global premium TV sales increased by more than double from the previous year, reaching 1.4 million units.
The Chinese TV makers are also playing a role in the premium TV market in order to overcome the sluggish domestic demand.
China`s No. 1 TV maker Hi-Sense is expected to release high-value organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs as early as 3Q09. Heisex ranked first in the Chinese premium TV market (over $ 2,000) last year with a market share of 15%.
TV sales in North America and Europe also declined last year. Last year, TV sales in the North American market were 41.64 million units, down 4.3% from the previous year.
In the case of Western Europe and Eastern Europe, sales dropped by 1.8% and 1.08% to 29.38 million and 14.73 million, respectively.
