Changes are being detected in the quiet domestic virtual reality (VR) game market. Large game companies that are in the spotlight are turning to the VR market as a platform diversification strategy. Small and mid-sized game companies are also anticipating the release of VR games that have been developed in the past.

According to industry sources on March 28, Netmarble Games, the No. 1 player in the domestic game industry, plans to formulate the entry into the VR market by adding the "VR service development and supply business" to its business purpose at the annual general shareholders` meeting on the 30th. It will also release relevant business plans from the shareholders` meeting.

The company has been selected as one of its core strategies to enter the VR market with its business diversification set as the biggest challenge this year.

NCsoft is expected to release its first VR game `Blade & Soul Table Arena` by the end of this year. We are developing games to secure new technologies and diversify the platforms of game contents. The game is a VR real-time strategy game that was introduced at the Oculus booth demonstration corner in the game developer conference `GDC 2017` held in the US in February last year.

Meanwhile, Smilegate has released three VR games last week at GDC 2018, aiming to launch in the year. They are "VR games", "Project Y (tentative name)", "Project R (tentative name)" and "Assault", which are romantic simulation, adventure and real time strategy genre VR games. The company has partnered with North American VR game developer Pesar Rock last year and has invested about 48 billion won in the Swedish game Sustain Breeze, which made VR headset "Star VR" in 2016.

Dragonfly has been providing VR shooting game "Special Force VR: Universal War" at VR theme park "Bright" which KT and GS Retail opened in Seoul Shinchon earlier this month. GDC showed this game this year. HanbitSoft is launching VR Rhythm Dance Game `Audition VR` next month and will release `Hellgate VR`, a VR shooting game under development, in August.

An industry expert said, "The VR game market has not been active due to lack of killer content and the popularity of major game companies." This year, big game companies are expected to move aggressively and move around. "
