China`s fabless semiconductor (a company which does not produce but manufactures semiconductors) is in growth. The Chinese fabless semiconductor market share in the global market has increased by double digits, and the top 50 companies in the world have also made 10 names.

Meanwhile, Korea`s fabless semiconductor companies did not have enough presence in the statistics. Fabless semiconductors are concentrated on system semiconductors rather than on memory, which shows the reality that Korea is vulnerable to non-memory semiconductors. According to a report released by IC Insights, a semiconductor market research company, the share of the world fabless semiconductor market based on the head office has been doubled as the share of Chinese companies has increased from 5% in 2010 to 11% in 2017.

The share of US companies has decreased by 16 % points from 69% to 53% in the same period. However, this is due to the Singapore-based company, Avago, acquired Broadcom, an American company. Broadcom`s share of the market is the same as it was seven years ago. Taiwan dropped 1 % point from 17 % to 16 %, while Europe shrank its share from 4 % to 2 %.

Last year, China also named 10 of the top 50 companies in the world, including High Silicon, Uni-group (Tsinghua Uni), ZTE Micro, and Datang. In 2009, Hai Silicone was the only company in the 50s to be named.

Meanwhile, Korea was not even included in the total share of the market. When we look at Japan`s share of 1% in both 2010 and 2017, we are less than 1%.

Only one company in the top 50 was named. LG affiliate Silicon Works was the only company in the world`s 50 largest fabless semiconductors with sales of USD 615 million, up 15 % from last year. In Japan, Megachips posted sales of USD 404 million last year, a record USD 640 million.

DRAM and NAND flash memory semiconductors in Korea, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix account for about half of the global market share, leading the world market, but the semiconductor industry is relatively low in the fabless.

Ahn Ji-hyeon, managing director of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, said, "Korea`s fabless semiconductors are mostly small and medium-sized enterprises, and there is no way to raise the market for individual companies." "We need to develop items jointly through cooperation between fabless companies."
