Samsung SDI has won orders for large and mid-size batteries from overseas, including electric cars, electric commercial vehicle batteries, and electric storage battery (ESS) batteries only this month. Strategies for cooperation with local companies in the world came into play.
According to the industry and foreign news sources on March 22, Samsung SDI and China`s Sunrow have been awarded contracts for supply of 23 inverter containers, including ESS and energy management system (EMS), with about 30 MWh storage capacity in Hokkaido, Japan. The Samsung SDI-line Glow Energy Storage Battery, which is a combination of the two companies, is included here.
Samsung SDI has already been recognized in the Japanese market by signing a contract with Japan`s Nichicon to supply 300,000 ESSs in succession from the first half of next year. On the 4th, the US AES Group also signed an agreement to supply about 13,000 battery modules for ESS to the 28MW PV business in Hawaii. According to market researcher B3, Samsung SDI ranked first in global ESS battery market last year with a market share of 38%.
We also won orders for the commercial vehicle division. Samsung SDI signed a contract with the German automotive parts maker webasto headquarters in Munich, Germany, to co-develop and manufacture high-voltage batteries for the commercial vehicle production. Samsung SDI plans to use its battery cells to create standard multi-battery packs for commercial vehicles and to provide tailor-made battery solutions to commercial vehicle manufacturers. The details of the contract size and other details were not disclosed. However, considering the fact that Bevasto`s annual sales amounted to EUR 3.2 billion (about KRW 4.2 trillion) in 2016, Samsung SDI is expected to grow its stature in the electric vehicle battery market of Samsung SDI.
Samsung SDI has recently been selected as a Volkswagen electric car battery supplier that invests only USD 25 billion in batteries (about KRW 26 trillion).
The industry expects Samsung SDI`s earnings to improve significantly this year, following the success of Samsung SDI`s success in winning orders from the beginning of the year. In particular, the company is likely to win additional orders in cooperation with various local companies such as the US, China and Europe.
An industry expert said, "In conjunction with local parts companies, the market can be more easily exploited, and sales by high value packages will also help profitability."
