Taking control of the future automotive industry

[Digital Times, Kim Yang-hyuk] The wheeled smartphone is going to be real. Key components of future automobiles can now be summarized as semiconductors, displays, and batteries, which are key components of smartphones. Technologies such as 5th generation (G) mobile communication, Internet (IoT), and AI (artificial intelligence) are also integrated here. As the application of electronic technology increases, the number of components applied to vehicles is expected to decrease to one-third of the existing level.

LG Electronics, LG Hausys, LG Display and other LG Group affiliates will have 11 key components in GM`s Volt EV. The battery in addition to LG Chem`s batteries, which is called the heart of the electric car, is supplied from the battery to the drive motor. In the future, as the application of future technologies such as autonomous navigation technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G communication is increased, the influence of the ICT industry in the finished car industry is expected to gradually increase.

Experts predict that smartphones that run in the future will come true. Automobiles based on autonomous driving technology provide space for occupants to take advantage of extra time for driving. Accordingly, the in-vehicle infotainment market is expected to grow rapidly. This means that all the services used by smartphones will be available in the car. To do this, technology from mobile carriers is essential.

Therefore, the automobile industry and the ICT industry have now become a necessity, not an option. The automotive industry, with its mass-production know-how, is now moving beyond hardware to software. Taiwan`s Foxconn makes the iPhone`s hardware, but no one says Foxconn`s iPhone. The iPhone will be Apple making software. The automobile industry also feels that it cannot survive in the market competition by making `shell` anymore. If you do not mind, it`s no surprise that you have to work with an ICT vendor. If you do not develop software that acts as a vehicle brain, you will not be able to take the lead in the future car market.

Meanwhile, several technologies have melted. However, the number of parts is likely to decline. In the future, it is expected that the future car will develop with an environmentally friendly car equipped with a battery. Immediate engines of the internal combustion engine are not necessary for the electric car.

When the fully autonomous vehicle comes out, the driver`s seat (steering wheel) and the driver`s seat with the accelerator pedal and brake pedal disappear. It is expected that the number of automobile parts, which will be about 30,000, will be reduced by about 10,000.

Future cars do not have to be electric cars, but electric cars and autonomous cars show good compatibility in terms of efficiency. Automobiles that use telecommunication equipment including radar, rider, three-dimensional map and various sensors, which are considered to be core technologies for autonomous driving, require a large amount of electricity.

Finally, a large amount of batteries must be applied to the vehicle to produce more electricity. Therefore, it is more efficient to drive both autonomous driving and electric equipment with one battery than installing separate batteries for electric production in the internal combustion engine vehicle. Already Europe, Britain, France, Germany and many other countries, including India, announced that it would ban the sale of internal combustion engine cars to internal combustion engines over the past decade. The paradigm of automobiles is moving from mechanical to electronic technology.

Korea`s electric vehicles and autonomous vehicle technology are estimated to be inferior to major countries such as the US, Europe, and Japan. If we lose hundreds of trillion won of huge futures market, our economic growth will suffer.

The experts point out that the government, the industry, and academia should all join together in the hurry to commercialize the technology and commercialization of future cars.
