LG U + is expected to promote international standardization of `Dual Registration`, a 5G mobile communication (5G) technology that is being developed by LG U +. As the government aims to commercialize 5G in March of next year, the standardization competition among mobile carriers has been on the rise, and LG U + is a strategic step for the company as it cannot overcome competition.

According to industry sources on February 27, LG U + plans to promote dual registration technology as a standalone (SA) standard technology of the International Mobile Telecommunications Standardization Organization (3GPP) as of June . 3GPP will approve the Release 15 standard phase at the June general meeting in San Diego, USA. 3GPP will begin Release 16 immediately after the June General Assembly. Currently, LG U + is developing dual registration technology as a 16-step candidate technology for 3GPP release.

In fact, LG U + first tried to promote dual registrations at the end of last year with Korea Telecommunication Technology Association (TTA) standard technology. However, as the 5G standard competition became more serious, the strategy was changed to promote 3GPP, the international standard and LG U + plans to implement TTA standards soon after 3GPP standardization.

Dual registration technology literally registers both networks. When 5G network and 4th generation mobile communication (LTE) network are both registered in the terminal, the 5G network is used first.

The LTE network will be used as a substitute for shadow areas or border areas where the 5G network is not yet established.

This dual registration technology belongs to the SA technology of the 5G standard. SA technology is a technology that connects LTE network or 5G network connected to terminal to 5G network which is core network. It`s closer to `true` 5G than non-stand-alone (NSA) technology that connects 5G and LTE at the same time.

LG U + is developing dual registration by complementing the wireless backhaul base station technology developed with equipment companies such as Nokia to solve the problem of shadow area and border area of the past LTE network. The industry expects this technology to be useful in the early stages of 5G. This is because communication can be used seamlessly in places where the 5G network cannot be built tightly.

A representative of LG U + said, "Dual registration technology is a core technology of 5G, and various equipment and solution companies are diversified. If standardization is done, more companies can participate in 5G ecosystem."
