SK Telecom revealed that it will conclude a strategic partnership with Nokia and Cisco in order to enter the global market of `5G-PON` solution, one of the 5G core technologies, in Barcelona, where MWC 2018 is held.

5G-PON (5G-Passive Optical Network) is a solution applied to the wired transmission network (front hall, Fronthaul) that connects the building unit base station (RU) such as antenna, repeater and the unit integrated base station (DU).

It is important to receive the wireless data signal from the customer contact point and transmit it to the unit integrated base station in the 5G era.

SK Telecom has been developing 5G-PON solutions that can integrate 3G, LTE and 5G in cooperation with domestic Jiangsu enterprises since 2015 and has been preemptively applying it to its network since last November.

SK Telecom expects to use 5G-PON technology to reduce the time required for 5G communication network by 20% compared to LTE communication network. By applying the 5G-PON solution, we can expect to improve the service quality of the book and mountain area. Existing wired network equipment must be installed inside the building for power supply, while 5G-PON is operated without power and is easy to install outdoors. Based on these advantages, it is possible to install radio stations closely in mountainous and remote areas where buildings are rare, and to improve the quality by optimizing the transmission network.

Besides, every time a new network such as high-speed Internet, 3G, or LTE is built, the inconvenience of having to build a separate dedicated wired network in the existing front-hole network is eliminated, and new infrastructure is expected to spread rapidly.

With this MOU, domestic Jiangsu enterprises with 5G technology such as optical communication are expected to enter the overseas market. The development of the 5G-PON solution was attended by Jiangsu enterprises of domestic telecommunication equipment such as Solide, HFR.

SK Telecom and HFR exported RingMUX, an exclusive front-end solution for LTE in 2016, to Verizon. In addition, SK Telecom has established domestic Jiangsu enterprise and ICT coalition in September last year and concluded a contract to export AI network solution to Barthe in India.

Kang Jong-ryong, head of SK Telecom ICT Infrastructure Center, said, "We are dedicated to securing innovative network technologies to provide the most stable 5G communication to our customers. We will work with Jiangsu domestic company to show the world`s most advanced 5G."
