[Digital Times, Kim Ji-young] Competition among global players to commercialize 5G mobile communications (5G) for the first time in the world is beginning to intensify in 5G communications application processor (AP) market.

According to industry sources on February 11, Qualcomm is expected to supply 5G chipsets to major smart phones, PCs and virtual reality devices makers starting next year, while Samsung Electronics, Apple and Huawei are developing their own chipsets for 5G.

Qualcomm has announced that Qualcomm has adopted Qualcomm`s Snapdragon X50 5G NR (New Radio) modem to launch 5G mobile devices targeting 2019. Among the domestic manufacturers, LG Electronics has been named by 19 companies including Sony, Asus, HTC, Oppo, Bibo, Xiaomi and ZTE. These makers plan to introduce a 5G mobile device with a Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem. Qualcomm will supply X50 5G NR modems to major smart phones, PCs, and virtual reality devices from next year. Up to 6 GHz and the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band.

What is unusual is that Samsung Electronics, Apple, and Huawei are among the world`s top three smartphone makers. These makers are known for their proprietary development of 5G mobile chipsets. As a result, it is interpreted that the 5G mobile chipset market is taking a leading role in the market.

In fact, Samsung Electronics decided to launch 5G smartphone early next year and showed 5G tablet terminal with KT at this Pyeongchang Olympic Games. This terminal uses a chipset developed by Samsung itself. Qualcomm`s listing on the list is that the 5G international standard has not been confirmed, and it is analyzed that it did not feel the necessity to join the Qualcomm camp in a hurry as it develops its own chipset. Samsung Electronics has built its own smartphones, the EXSNOS series and the QUALCOMM Snapdragon series.

Meanwhile, Apple and Huawei are also said to be developing a 5G chipset. Apple built its own A11 processor, a proprietary AP developed in the 10-nanometer process, on both iPhone 8 and iPhone X. IPhone 8 and iPhone X also use Qualcomm and Intel chips. Huawei is also using Qualcomm chips, but last year there was a precedent in which the development of the 990 Ki-Line 970 chipset for mobile AI was implemented on the flagship smartphone.

An industry specialist said, "Manufacturers that have not yet confirmed Qualcomm`s 5G communication modem have been investing in chipset development for years," he said. "He said.
