The display market is expected to change after the launch of LG Display and China BOE and Japan`s Sharp in the small- and medium-sized organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display market, which has been dominated by Samsung Display.

According to industry sources, on January 22, competition will intensify as display makers enter the small- and mid-sized OLED market, where Samsung Display has dominated the market with a 98.5% market share.

Meanwhile, LG Display is expected to start supplying OLED panels to Apple as early as the second half of this year. The company has been steadily increasing its portion of small- and medium-sized OLED panels since last year. The Paju E2 line in Gyeonggi-do and the Gumi E5 line in Gyeongbuk are in operation.

In the second half of this year, the company plans to operate an additional E6 production line in Paju. The company plans to produce small and medium-sized OLEDs in the second half of the year by installing production equipment following the construction of the E6 plant.

LG Display is reportedly negotiating with Apple to supply flexible OLED panels to the new iPhone. Although the volume is around 15 million units, it is expected to gradually increase the volume after the deal with Apple.

BOE in China is also actively pursuing the choice of small and medium-sized OLED supply to Apple.

BOE started to produce small and medium size flexible OLED in C7 B7 production line from last November. It plans to produce 48,000 6G OLED panels per month by next year. In addition, BOE is expected to build an OLED line for Apple in the B11 production line in China.

Chinese display makers such as BOE, China Star (CSOT), Vision Oaks and Ever Display are investing in the construction of 6G flexible OLED production lines.

Sharp, which was acquired by Foxconn in Taiwan, also revealed its entry into the OLED panel, and will begin full-fledged small and mid-sized OLED production from the second quarter of this year. The mass production of OLED panels will be adopted in some models of Sharp`s premium smartphones to be released in June.

In particular, since Foxconn is Apple`s biggest supplier, the industry predicts that if Sharp gets a certain level of OLED panel yield, it can bring back the volume for the Apple iPhone.

A representative of the display industry said, "Currently, flexible OLED demand is more than supply due to lack of technology and facilities of each company. However, over-supply is also getting worse by aggressively investing in the production of small and medium-sized OLED panels by Samsung and LG and Chinese companies." "As the number of cases in which OLED panels are adopted as premium product displays increases, the supply competition between existing Samsung display and second-tier companies will become more intense."
