[Digital Times, Jong Ye-rin] Three mobile carriers are entering a competition to preempt the 10-gigabit Internet market, which is 10 times faster than Giga Internet, the fastest broadband internet service currently available. Mobile carriers plan to commercialize 10G Internet in the next year with the 5G mobile communication (5G) as the main channel necessary for the 4th industrial revolution era.
According to the industry on January 21, the government, KT, SK Broadband and LG U Plus entered into a full-fledged launch plan with the plan to commercialize 10G Internet service this year.
KT, on January 22, revealed that it will commercialize 10 gigabit internet in the year when Giga Internet subscribers exceed 4 million people in 3 years and 3 months. The 10 Gigabit Internet is 10 times faster than Giga Internet, which provides 1Gbps speed, and it supports the major services of the 4th industrial revolution era such as high resolution image, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
Last November, KT developed a "100G-PON" transmission solution, which is one of the ways to secure 10G Internet. The `100G-PON` technology transmits up to 100Gbps speed using 10 wavelengths that can transmit 10Gbps per second in one line. A KT official said, "In order to achieve 100Gbps speed, we can save time and money by utilizing existing fiber optic cable without increasing 10-Gbps transmission line tenfold."
Meanwhile, KT is also conducting a 10-gigabit Internet pilot project in the Seoul metropolitan area and some parts of Pyeongchang. Starting this year, the 10-gigabit Internet Experience Team will be operated to find ways to improve the 10-gigabit internet and reflect it in commercialization. An official of the company said, "We plan to increase the number of 10-gigabit internet pilot services that are mainly focused on apartment complexes."
KT will accelerate the commercialization of 10G Internet from the beginning of the year, and its competitors will move more rapidly. SK Broadband plans to launch a 10-gigabit Internet pilot service in Seoul and some parts of Anyang since last year, and to complement the improvements it has made, and to commercialize it during the year. An SK bangbang official said, "We will try to commercialize the 10-gigabit internet service quickly, though it is not the right time." LG Uplus has also set its goal of commercializing 10G internet this year, and demonstrated its "Home 10G Internet" solution at the end of last year.
Mobile carriers are accelerating the commercialization of the 10Gb Internet service from the beginning of the new year because the growth potential of the market is large. "As the demand for video and other services increases, more and more consumers want to enjoy various services at a faster pace," an industry official said.
In fact, Giga Internet service, which is the fastest Internet service, is rapidly growing. As of November last year, among the total 21 million Internet subscribers, 6.7 million Internet subscribers have used it. One in three Internet service users is using Giga Internet. KT, the number one Internet service provider, said that the proportion of Giga Internet subscribers among all its Internet subscribers increased from 25.7% in 2015 to 66.6% last year, more than doubled.
The Korean government is also actively promoting the 10G Internet service, which is putting pressure on its strategy. Last year, the government formed a "10-Giga Internet Association" jointly with the public. KT, SK Broadband, SK Telecom, SK Telecom, SK Telecom, SK Telecom, SK Telecom, SK Telecom, SK Telecom, SK Telecom, SK Telecom, LG U +, and CJ Hello. The government plans to promote the rapid commercialization of the 10 Gigabit Internets through the association and build facilities together. An official in the industry said, "Since the government is participating directly, the 10-gigabit Internet is expected to be provided at a price comparable to that of the Gigabit Internet.
