[Digital Times, Kang Eun-seong] A 45-passenger bus without a driver runs through the city center of a big city. The 45-person autonomous driving bus (photo) of artificial intelligence `driving` based on 5G (5G) network is the main character.
KT, on January 8, stated that it has obtained permission to operate the 5G-based autonomous bus from the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. With permission, KT`s large self-driving buses can operate both on motor-driven roads and on urban roads. Last September, the company received a permission to operate 25-pass autonomous buses on public roads. This time, I got permission to autonomously drive the 45-passenger bus in the downtown area.
The 5G network has the characteristics of realizing ultra-high-speed data communication as well as ultra-low-level connectivity of the order of one hundred thousandths of a second. Currently, the 4G LTE network has a delay of about 100ms (milliseconds, one thousandth of a second). When using general services such as Internet access or watching videos, it is actually a delay time which is hardly felt, but it is a somewhat long delay time in serious matters such as autonomous driving and medical care. The 5G network aims at 1 ~ 2 ms for the radio section connecting between the base station and the terminal, and about 10 ms for the terminal section connecting between the terminal and the terminal.
Meanwhile, once a self-propelled bus finds a person who suddenly jumps out ahead and suddenly makes a stoppage, current 4G LTE will go ahead by about 3m to the level of 100 ms. However, implementing an ultra-low delay of 10 ms can prevent accidents by operating the brakes at the same time as real people do.
Especially, an autonomous bus of KT is a 45-passenger vehicle with a body length of 12m and a vehicle width of 2.5m. In order to operate a large-sized bus while maintaining a minimum lane width of 3 m, it is necessary to control the vehicle within one »Â (about 25 cm) to the left and right. KT has introduced a 5G and LTE network-based V2X (Vehicle-to-everything) autonomous navigation system to control the full operation of large buses, which are larger than small buses.
This method can be used for accurate position measurement with a few centimeters accuracy using KT wireless network in addition to existing sensors such as lidar and camera, situation determination ability through V2X vehicle communication infrastructure and the safety of operation is remarkably improved.
KT said, "It is possible to perform stable operation not only at high speed autonomous speed of more than 70km / h, but also in curve, left and right turn, pedestrian detection, and traffic light interlocking." We have completed preparations for complicated urban autonomous driving, "We are now able to run tests on the public transportation sector, which is expected to be introduced first."
KT will provide various operating data for autonomous driving on expressways and downtown areas through trial operation of large self-propelled buses in the future and will utilize V2X-based cooperative autonomous driving services such as platooning and C-ITS infrastructure technology development to be. Also, autonomous buses will be operated in Zero City, Pangyo, an autonomous demonstration complex.
"KT is expected to secure not only autonomous passenger cars but also the best wireless infrastructure technology for self-running commercialization through trial operation of self-driving buses, which are likely to be commercialized," said Jeon Hong-beom, director of infrastructure research institute at KT Fusion Technology Institute. "We will cooperate with the next generation intelligent transportation system demonstration project of the local government and cooperate with the autonomous navigation commercialization."
