Verizon, America`s No. 1 mobile carrier is gearing up for the 5G commercialization at the end of this year, and competition for major countries for 5G commercialization is becoming more intense. As Korea`s first commercialization of the world`s first 5G commercial vehicle based on the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, major countries are accelerating the commercialization of the Olympic Games.

Verizon is expected to showcase its 5G communications equipment for 5G deployments, Verizon said on Tuesday (May 3). Verizon has already said that by the end of 2018, 5 cities in the US will start 5G service with fixed wireless access (FWA) in the second half of last year. The company has built its own 5G standard in partnership with Samsung and Intel to build 5G. It is said that the communication equipment supplied by Samsung Electronics was also made by Verizon`s 5G standard. AT & T plans to commercialize 5G at the end of the year or early next year, and major carriers in the US, such as Sprint and T-Mobile, are scheduled for early commercialization in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

On the other hand, the United States, Japan also turned its attention to offering commercial services ahead of schedule to show 5G pilot service at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications recently set up a frequency allocation plan for 5G, and developed a frequency supply strategy for seven bands. China also plans to launch the IMT2020 5G promotional group, centering on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, for early commercialization.

5G has been expected to be completed by 2025, starting with pilot services in the early 2020s. However, when the government promised to take the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games as a `5G Olympic` and announced its early commercialization policy, major countries that were stimulated started to commercialize early.

However, Verizon and AT & T are planning to commercialize their new products in the first half of this year, six months ahead of Korea, which is set to commercialize the first half of 2019. There may be a disruption in the government`s policy to `commercialize the world`s first`. In this regard, the industry explained that the 5G system built by the United States would not be a true `mobile communication`, so it would be reasonable to launch the `world`s first 5G commercialization` in Korea. "5G in the US is closer to wireless high-speed Internet service than mobile communication with FWA," said Oh Sung-mok, president of KT Network. "Korea`s 5G mobile communication recognized by international organizations will be the first to demonstrate pilot services at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and it is the fastest schedule to commercialize until the first half of the year."

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will initially establish a 5G fixed wireless access scheme and the 5G frequency allocation for mobile communications will begin in 2019.

Meanwhile, in a meeting with reporters at the end of last year, Yoo Young-min, the Minister of Science, Technology and Information Technology, said, "The NSA standard was established at 3GPP on December 21, the international standards organization for mobile communications. "It will be possible to commercialize it in the first half of 2019 based on this," he said.

¡Þ 5G standard lead the domestic equipment makers = 5 government and industry 5G early commercialization. It is not merely to promote for the honor of being `world`s first`. It is more meaningful to lead international standards that will be applied to the global 5G network before commercialization.

Unlike the existing 3G and 4G, 5G is the key to building ultra-small base stations (small cell), antennas and backhaul. If 4G LTE is focused on backbone investment for broadband communication, it is important to establish the standard of related equipment since 5G should build compact base station which can complement straight line of high frequency.

"We have a lot of our PSI demonstration standards (SIG standards) in this NSA standard," said Young-min Young, a minister of the Ministry of Information and Communication. "Our technology is leading the world 5G standard."

Kim Hong-sik, a research fellow at Hana Financial Group, said, "The 5G is not limited to the domestic market, but the equipment market is expected to increase explosively as the world is working on the very high frequency band at the same time. "As the 5G global standard can also lead, it is anticipated that domestic companies will be exported overseas as well." "The related equipment companies such as antennas, small cells and backhaul are also expected to benefit greatly." Considering the current frequency auction schedule and 5G commercialization period and the network equipment industry will benefit greatly from the third quarter.
