Innovative growth 2018
Innovative technology to lead a future

[Digital Times, Kang Eun-seong] This year, Korea is expected to take an economic leap with innovative technologies such as early commercialization of 5G mobile communication (5G) that will advance the fourth industrial revolution to `reality`. The first PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games to be held on February 9th is the world`s first to launch the 5G pilot service. Based on the 5G infrastructure, the government invests a total of KRW 4.695 trillion in the fourth Industrial Revolution R & D field, such as environment, safety, and finding food for the future.

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Information (MOCT), the ministry of the 4th Industrial Revolution, announced on April 1 that it will secure `5G leadership` by taking the PyeongChang Winter Olympics as ICT Olympics. "We will work hard to promote the excellence of Korea`s science and technology and ICT to the world through the Olympics and Paralympics held in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, and to raise the profile of the Republic of Korea," said Yoo Young-min, the Minister of Information and Communication.

Meanwhile, Korea has achieved a remarkable achievement after the Korean War through the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and won the title "Miracle of the Han River". Especially, the 88 Seoul Olympic Games are the first in the history of the Olympics to `computerize` all the competitions and it is evaluated that Korea has laid the foundations for becoming an IT powerhouse. In the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, Korea experienced the currency crisis and overcame the crisis of IMF bailout and showed the status of the information and communication powerhouse.

5G demonstration service and UHD broadcasting will be introduced for the first time in the Olympic Games at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics. "The 5G technology, which was prepared for the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, was adopted as an international standard," he said. "By launching the world`s first commercialization of 5G, we will accelerate the fourth industrial revolution and it will open up the era of growing together."

The Ministry of Information and Communication announced the plan of R & D comprehensive implementation of 4,695.5 billion won. ICT sector 942.4 billion won, and bio sector 349 billion won to invest in promising fields that can become `food` in the future. It will invest KRW 16.4 billion, which is 3 billion won more than last year, in the field of national life research. The intention is to strengthen the solution of social problems such as traffic and welfare by utilizing ICT.

The Comprehensive Implementation Plan has been prepared to keep pace with science and technology and ICT policies such as the `Fourth Industrial Revolution Response Plan` and to strengthen the roles of science technology and ICT in all areas of social problems such as disaster, safety and environment.

Especially, the plan will expand investments in future promising technology development to support innovation growth.

We will invest KRW 349 billion, an increase of KRW 20.7 billion compared to the previous year, in the key frontier fields of the bio-economic era, including new drugs, medical devices, anti-viral diseases, and brain research. We will develop core technology packages in response to climate change and it will invest KRW 87.2 billion in producing carbon resources along with artificial intelligence, fine dust, carbon resources, and precision medical care.

It will strategically invest in intelligent technologies and convergence-based technologies in order to respond to the 4th Industrial Revolution.

It will also pursue new R & D activities for next generation ultra-small IoT (4.7 billion won), which is used for block chain (4.5 billion won), which is the trust base of intelligence information society, and precision monitoring of various fields such as environment, disaster, disaster and facilities.

Beyond 5G for 5G convergence service and mobile communication after 5G, human-machine collaboration, data analysis and management based on artificial intelligence, automobile, education, manufacturing etc. We will continue to develop key technologies to cope with the fourth industrial revolution such as HR (Realistic Reality).

On the other hand, the three mobile carriers will invest in 5G in earnest this year with the aim of commercialization in 2019. The initial investment cost is expected to surpass 10 trillion won by adding the frequency auction fee scheduled for June.
