The market for active organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) display panels is expected to grow by over 200% in 2022, five years from now. Although it has been somewhat sluggish this year, it is expected to continue its high double-digit annual growth rate from next year.
According to a survey of AMOLED global market by market researcher Yano Economic Research Institute on December 11, AMOLED panel market is expected to reach 1,536.6 million units in 2022 from 422 million units in the previous year based on shipment.
According to the year, growth is expected to slow down slightly to 477.8 billion units, an increase of 12.3% compared to last year, which grew 35.9% over the previous year. However, with the launch of AMOLED-equipped iPhone X last month, it is expected to reach 635.5 million units, an increase of 34.1% next year. It is expected to grow by 39.3% in 2019, 18.1% in 2020, 19.4% in 2021 and 23.1% in 2022.
Meanwhile, the Yano Economic Research Institute predicts new demand for smart watches, tablets, and automobiles is expected to emerge with the increase in AMOLED demand for smartphones including the iPhone X next year. In addition, the OLED TV market is expected to grow in earnest, and 2022 AMOLED shipments are expected to exceed three times this year.
Global display companies are preparing to enter the AMOLED market in earnest in response to such market growth. The Yano Institute of Economic Research predicts that display panel manufacturers such as BOE, China Star (CSOT) and Tianma in China, Japan display makers such as Japan Display and Sharp will also start full-scale mass production from 2019-2020.
In the AMOLED market, Samsung Display has a market share of 98.5% in mid- to small-sized market, and LG Display is the only producer in the large-sized market. LG Display plans to invest a total of KRW 20 trillion, including KRW 15 trillion in Korea and KRW 5 trillion in China, in order to develop related technologies and expand production by 2020.
Samsung Display has invested KRW 14.1 trillion in facility investment this year and expects the industry to increase to 16 trillion won next year.
"We believe that AMOLED`s inherent characteristics of curved and unbreakable characteristics, especially for automotive displays, are well utilized in the next generation of displays," said Yano Research Associate. "We expect AMOLED panels More than 300 million shipments will come out only from this expansion, "he pointed out.
