As the bus moved, nearby 3.5GHz frequency band base stations and 28GHz frequency band base stations were displayed on the screen at a glance. In the case of 3.5GHz, the speed of 1.5Gbps was also achieved in the moving bus, and the bandwidth of the 28GHz band was 7Gbps in the coverage range.
Using DC (Dual Connectivity) technology, network speeds exceeded 10Gbps in areas where two base stations are connected. DC technology is a technology that can maintain the service quality even when moving the boundary area between the base stations while increasing the data transmission speed in the mixed environment of the base stations using frequencies having different radio wave distances. In addition to the basic network, if additional networks are built in the dense traffic area, it is possible to use the high-speed data service that is transmitted simultaneously from the two network base stations, and the temporary service interruption or rapid decrease in speed Can be prevented.
"Handover," which allows seamless transmission and reception even within a moving bus, was carried out without difficulty.
Handover is the most basic technology of mobile communication. However, 5G uses the high frequency band as in the 28GHz band. The characteristic of the frequency is that the lower the frequency band is, the wider the frequency range is, and the higher the frequency band is, the narrower the reach is. In addition, because of its strong straightness, there is a tendency that if there are obstacles such as buildings or roadside trees, there is a lack of nature (diffractability) to turn the obstacles.
Meanwhile, the 28GHz band is advantageous in that it can use a wide band at a frequency of 10 times or more higher than that of the 2GHz band, which is the conventional mobile communication band, but its coverage is narrow due to its short reach. Therefore, in order to compensate for narrow coverage, telecommunication carriers should build up more base stations than when building 3G or 4G networks.
That is why LG U + is doing 5G handover and commercial service testing in Gangnam station. Gangnam Station is not only a place where the load of the base station is concentrated due to the large number of people floating in the station, Therefore, it is possible to provide 5G service with higher speed and quality even if there is less floating population and fewer buildings than Gangnam station, if Gigabit speed can be realized in Kangnam station and the network can be operated continuously.
Kwang Suk-choi, CEO of LG U+, stated, "The current theoretical LTE speed is 375Mbps considering the 3-band frequency convergence technology (CA). It takes about 42 seconds to download one 20GB movie. "We can download one 20GB movie in 1.6 seconds, which is only one-26th of a bus."
