Paid broadcasting member to exceed 30 million¡¦ KT subsidiaries possess 30.45% share

In the first half of this year, for the first time, more than 30 million subscribers to paid TV services such as general wired broadcasting (SO), satellite broadcasting, and Internet multimedia broadcasting (IPTV) The market share of KT affiliated with KT and KT skylife was 30.45%, up 0.27 percentage point from the second half of last year, and it became a little closer to 33.33% which is the legal upper limit of the regulation of the pay broadcasting sum regulation.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology`s Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) announced on July 9, the number of subscribers of paid broadcasting service in the first half of 2017, and the result of verification and market share calculation, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the total number of paying subscribers in the first half of this year increased by 834,614, (6-month average). This is the first time that the number of pay TV subscribers has exceeded 30 million.

KT had 6,067,731 (market share 19.92%), SK Broadband 407,644 (13.38%), CJ Hello 3,951,144 (12.97%) and Tibb Road 3,326,770 (10.59% , And KT Skylife totaled 3.26 million (10.53%) by company.

Especially, the number of subscribers including KT and KT Skylife increased by 330,000 from the second half of 2016 to 9.27 million. As a result, the combined market share of the KT affiliate rose to 30.45%, up 0.27 percentage points from the second half of last year. Although the total capping limit of 33.33% is not yet exceeded, it is closer to the standard.

By media, the number of IPTV subscribers increased remarkably. The number of subscribers was 13,137,720 (45.76%), while IPTV recorded 13,318,464 (43.71%). Followed by satellite broadcasting with 3.26 million (10.53 percent). The number of IPTV subscribers grew by 720,040 more than in the first half of this year, so SO and satellite broadcasts surpassed. The number of SO subscribers increased by 52,382 from the second half of last year, and satellite broadcasting increased by 42,127 subscribers. However, subscriber crossover, in which IPTV surpasses cable TV, did not occur as IPTV subscriber growth slowed.

The number of individual subscribers was 16,272,650 (53.43%), followed by 117,286,649 (38.51%) of multiple subscribers and 245,669 (8.06%) of group subscribers. This number of subscribers and market share will be used to judge whether the regulation on the combined market share of related parties is in conflict with Article 8 of the Broadcast Act and Article 13 of the IPTV Act.

KT representative said, "The increase in the share of the audience is meaningful in terms of consumer choice."
