Big data based ‘Smart City’ creation to be accelerated

President Moon Jae-in has decided to introduce and operate a big data-based city operating system based on using big data for `smart city` business and increasing citizen participation. Therefore, a separate `Smart City Specialization` will be formed at the 4th Industrial Revolution Committee.
Presidential spokesman Park Soo-hyun, on October 30, stated, President Moon Jae-in presided over the meeting of chief and advisors and examined the direction of smart city promotion. Smart City is a futuristic city that uses information and communication technology (ICT) to intelligently network city functions. President Moon promised to expand into the future growth engine in response to the Fourth Industrial Revolution through the Smart City in the presidential election pledge.
President Moon also pointed out in the report of the Ministry of Land Transport and Traffic in August that "We should promote the national demonstration project in the blank state with the promotion of the smart city of the existing city". Accordingly, the government is preparing directions for the project by collecting opinions from related ministries and experts.
It was pointed out that U-City centered on a new city had insufficient data accumulation at the meeting of the chief advisor, utilization and creation of private business. Besides, civilian business through private citizen collaboration and citizen satisfaction enhancement plan through smart platform and integrated platform of old city were reported. The government has decided to focus on solving urban problems through the use of big data to increase sustainability.
Specific directions for the promotion of smart cities are △ to create a new world-class smart city, △ to promote the Smart City renewal New Deal project, △ to improve the smart city performance and to spread the business within and outside the country.
The creation of a world-class smart city is a way to implement a big data-based urban operating system under joint public-private partnership, and to discover and reflect new technology test bed and citizen`s sensible service.
Therefore, the government will formulate a separate Smart City special committee for the fourth Industrial Revolution Committee, discuss the direction of its implementation, and plan to introduce it to the fourth Industrial Revolution Committee by December.
The New Deal for Smart City Renewal is going to spread to other municipalities as a representative model after selecting and supporting a place where early performance can be created in `2017 Urban Renewal New Deal`.
Besides, the government plans to integrate the existing Smart City-related work that has been promoted by the central government, the local governments, and the private sector into an integrated platform to enhance smart city performance.
"We will concentrate on resolving urban problems and creating innovative growth engines by finding a place where early performance can be achieved through the stages of urban development through the direction of smart city promotion," stated Park Soo-hyun, spokesperson for Cheong Wa Dae. "We will put it in place in time and use it as a driving force for innovation growth."
