Global carmakers using Korean battery manufacturers are trying to build an electric car factory in China, hoping for Korean battery makers who were struggling with high-grade missile defense systems (THAAD) retaliation.

In contrast, global automakers are satisfied with the quality of Chinese battery makers, which are growing under the protection of the Chinese government, and there is a concern that they may lose all of the battery market in China if they use these products.

According to the BMW blog and industry on October 17, inside Samsung SDI, it is heard that BMW is negotiating the production of outsourced mini-electric car with Chinese carmaker Changchung Motor.

Therefore, BMW commented on the blog in April 2016 about joint development of Chongqing automobile and electric car with hybrid car, and said that it is expanding discussions to outsource production of mini model this year.

GM also plans to introduce at least 10 new electric or hybrid cars to the Chinese market by 2020. As a result, some electric vehicles launched in China are likely to contain LG Chem batteries.

Samsung SDI is supplying batteries to BMW`s electric car i3 and plug-in hybrid car i8, and LG Chem supplies batteries to GM`s main electric Chevrolet Volt. "As the Chinese government abolishes the electric vehicle battery subsidy by 2020, when they produce electric cars, Korean battery makers will be able to compete with Chinese battery makers in price and quality," he said. "GM and BMW I hope that our companies will play a key role in expanding the battery market in China."

In fact, LG Chem had a number of Chinese carmakers such as Changchung, Shanghai, Dai, and Changan. However, after the Chinese government eliminated LG Chem`s batteries from the subsidy, The supply has been discontinued. The situation is the same for Samsung SDI, which has Chinese customers such as Gongtang, Photon and JAC.

However, there is also concern that the situation will change if the Chinese makers` batteries are approved by global automakers before 2020. According to industry sources, major automakers are developing Chinese electric cars to receive subsidies and are using Chinese batteries. The industry expects that the electric car battery of Chinese makers is still lower in quality than LG Chem and Samsung SDI, but will grow as fast as economies of scale. According to market researcher SNE Research, as of the end of July 2011, six Chinese battery makers are ranked among the top 10 global battery shipments, with global automakers and Chinese battery makers If the interests are right, it can be negative for domestic companies. In fact, GM plans to build a battery plant with China SAIC.
