`Original` web original content, toward new Hallyu
(Prize) World contents market which focuses on `web original`
[Digital Times, Kim Soo-yeon] Worldwide content dinosaurs are paying attention to `web original` content. Web original content means narrowly original content produced by web-based content platform vendors, broadly provided only on its own platform. The content of the media users has rapidly shifted from `anbang` and `theater` to `all mobile environments accessible to the Internet` and these web original contents are rapidly spreading. Experts say that genres will quickly jump over the influence of traditional content such as TV dramas. The Netflix craze is making this happen, and our content industry is advising us to take this opportunity as a stepping stone.
According to the contents industry and foreign media on October 9, the movement to search for new food in the web original contents market is getting into full swing, centering on major contents companies in the world. The starting point of this move is the worldwide success of `House of Cards`, a self-produced web drama of Netflix, a US video streaming Service Company. Netflix surpassed cable TV in the US market in the first quarter of this year, as the web drama, which is based on Michael Dobbs` novel of the US political story, Netflix has about 51 million subscribers and cable TV has 48 million subscribers.
Currently, the content platform dinosaurs are stimulated by Netflix`s propaganda and are getting ahead of web original content. It is interpreted that the decision to own popular content that is not available elsewhere can change the market landscape.
Meanwhile, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Facebook will invest USD 1 billion (about KRW 1.1 trillion) to create its own content next year.
There is no official reference to Facebook, but the industry believes that Facebook is likely to acquire a content publisher and create exclusive content that can only be seen on its own platform. This content can be exposed through Facebook and Instagram, which possess 2 billion visitors and 600 million monthly visitors, respectively.
Apple, on the other hand, will invest USD 1 billion next year to create its own content. The company has also introduced a TV program production team by recruiting prominent TV content creators from Sony Pictures. In-house content will be distributed via iTunes. According to Business Insider, USD 1 billion is enough to produce at least 10 TV programs. Netflix is investing about USD 6 billion a year in content production.
Google`s pay-per-view platform, YouTube Red, which has been rated less competitive than Netflix in its content, recently acquired the rights to Cobra Kai.
Cobra Kai is a drama about a popular American teenage movie `Karate Kid` in the 1980s, about 30 years later. It is anticipated that the acquisition of Web original content will become more intense.
"In the mobile era where users can access the Internet anytime and anywhere," said Kim Lak-gyun, director of global business support at Korea Creative Content Agency, "content consumers do not simply watch the contents of broadcasters unilaterally but spend well. The reason that the value in the viewing environment increases is the story that is the source of `well-made contents`. "The world platform operators are investing in web original content to maximize the story, and this move will become more active as long as the media viewing environment is not reversed."
