Future public IT road market to be opened in KRW 100 billion in early next year

The future road system which continuously exchanges information with the autonomous driving vehicle will be constructed in the Seoul sub-urban ring road and the Jungbu highway as early as March next year. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Highway Corporation is expected to establish next-generation intelligent transportation system (C-ITS), which has been in the R & D stage, from next year to some freeways and municipalities.

Handsets, mobile phones, mobile carriers, IT companies such as Hyundai Kia Motors, Samsung Electronics, SK Telecom, KT, LG CNS, Lotte Information Co., and POSCO ICT, which have been focusing on C-ITS, competition for initiative is expected to unfold.

According to the related organizations and the IT industry on October 9, Korea Highway Corporation (President and CEO) will install the C-ITS, which has been tested in some test sections of the Kyungbu Expressway, from next year to the entire expressway and will start building the system in March.

According to a representative from Korea Expressway Corporation, "The road system should be completely different from the current road if the autonomous vehicle needs to run on the actual road." The C-ITS, in which roads and cars exchange information in real time and the Jungbu Expressway Hanam ~ Law Code 40.7 km."

Road construction will analyze the traffic characteristics along with traffic volume and plan to determine the final destination section by consulting government departments by the end of November. Previously, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has been conducting C-ITS technology development since 2007, and tested and installed a test system at 87.9 km from the Sejong-Daejeon section of Kyungbu Expressway.

Meanwhile, Road Corporation plans to build on the road a digital infrastructure that allows autonomous vehicles to operate safely based on the C-ITS project. It will send and receive nearby vehicles, road infrastructure, and traffic information with a difference in autonomy by constructing a mobile communication network and a wireless communication network (wave) around the road. Once C-ITS is built, real-time response cab become possible as rear vehicle can understand the situation of the vehicle ahead while communicating through inter-vehicle communication. The autonomous vehicle is a sensor, a camera, and radar that detects the road situation and drives itself. It should be compensated by an external system in the case of the weather condition is bad or the road structure is inappropriate.

As C-ITS project is promoted industry expectations for large-scale public IT market are growing.

According to a specialist from the IT service industry, "It is difficult to predict the size of C-ITS, but C-ITS is expected to be at least hundreds of billions of won in order to be built not only on highways but also on national highways and municipalities. It is said that it will order an additional 300 billion won business."

In the industrial sector, automakers such as Hyundai Motor Company, Samsung Electronics, mobile carriers such as SKT and KT, LG CNS, POSCO ICT, and Lotte Information and Communications, Hyundai Motor has developed its own autonomous vehicle and C-ITS interworking technology, and SKT and KT have invested in technology by considering C-ITS and autonomous car as important future communication market.

Especially, SKT has decided to build a 5G network in K-City, the test city of the Hwaseong Autonomous Vehicle, Samsung Electronics plans to install a C-ITS communication chip in its mobile phone.

Besides, more than 70 companies, including security and software, collaborate with road construction companies to prepare the market. When the business is ordered, it is expected that they will be fiercely competitive and win-win.

"The C-ITS is just beginning to build up globally," a road construction expert said. "We will work closely with domestic companies to improve the level of technological completeness, build systems and become a world-class success story."
