[Digital Times, Kim Soo-yeon] Naver has acquired a `hardware` technology company to expand its autonomous vehicle business. Investments in the software sector continued through mergers and acquisitions and in-house development, but this is the first investment in hardware. It will be analyzed as a move to preemptively launch the autonomous car market to be launched in earnest by 2020.

On September 8, Naver Co., Ltd jointly invested USD 65 million (about KRW 72.8 billion) with Israeli company Innovice Technologies (Innobiz), which develops the core of autonomous navigation technology, LiDAR.

Lada is the `eye` of autonomous cars. Unlike radars that use radio waves, Lada accurately measures the position and distance of objects by using a laser with a strong linearity. It is possible to recognize a radius situation of more than a few tens of meters around the sensor in real time through the 3D data obtained from the 3D data and to provide nearby obstacle, position and distance information of the front car.

The company has acquired patents that recognize its surroundings regardless of changes in light and weather conditions. Besides, the company is developing technologies to recognize objects using deep-running algorithms based on algorithms that allow computers to think and learn. The company plans to release `Innobiz Pro Raider`, which will be installed in the finished car, in the first quarter of next year. In order to launch in 2019, Inno-Wise One ` that corresponds to the stage where driver control is unnecessary).

It is worth noteworthy that Naver has secured hardware technology as well as the software technology required for autonomous vehicles with this strategic investment. Naver has been researching the `Cognition` technology, a key software technology for autonomous vehicles, and is currently researching space and mobile AI technologies that can be applied to autonomous vehicles through Naver Labs Europe, a recently acquired AI research institute. Besides, it has secured hardware technology that can generate synergy with its own Naver Labs` investment in InnoBiz. Naver is now planning to make a full-fledged technological competition with global information and communication technology (ICT) companies such as Google, Apple, Xerox, Cisco, and Qualcomm that prepare for the market. The actual autonomous car is getting stronger with the technology development of ICT companies as well as automobile manufacturers. According to the Institute of Intelligence and Information Technology (AIRI), about 100 US patent applications related to autonomous driving, which were filed between 2005 and the first half of this year, were filed by ICT companies.

Song Chang-hyun, Naver CTO and CEO of Naver Labs, mentioned, "In order to secure core technologies for autonomous driving, the automotive, IT, and electronics industries are getting into a full-fledged competition. While studying deep, we plan to expand strategic investment and technical cooperation with technology companies in the driving area. "
