[Digital Times, Kim Ji-yeong] The price of premium smartphones for cell phone companies, which will be on display from this month, is expected to exceed KRW 1 million for the first time. This is because Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Apple have installed many new features in their strategic smartphones, the Galaxy Note 8, V30 and the iPhone 8.

According to the industry on September 3, the release of Apple`s iPhone 8, to be released on September 12, and the Galaxy Note 8, to be released on September 21, will all exceed KRW 1 million.

The IT media and major foreign investors predict that the price of the iPhone 8 will be USD 999, based on the 32GB model. In the case of the iPhone 8 256GB, it is expected to go up to USD 1299 to USD 1399. This means that it will cost more than the iPhone 7 with an AR (Augmented Reality) sensor in addition to a dual camera. Domestic shipments are expected to exceed KRW 1.2 million.

Meanwhile, Galaxy Note 8, Samsung`s strategic smartphone, is also almost certain to exceed KRW 1 million in shipments. Galaxy Note 8, which was unveiled on August 23, makes reservations in more than 20 countries for the next day and reserves more than KRW 1 million. The cheapest 64GB model is also booked in Germany for KRW 999. Heo Dong-jin, chief executive of Samsung Electronics` wireless business, mentioned that Galaxy Note 8 prices will not exceed KRW 1 million at the annual IFA 2017 exhibition in Europe.

The LG V30, which will be released on the same day as the Galaxy Note 8, will be priced at KRW 900,000 for the 64GB model, while the price of the 128GB model (plus) is about KRW 1,000,000.

This is due to the intensifying competition among mobile phone companies. The company says it will inevitably ramp up costs by adopting an application processor (AP), which affects the performance of smartphones, and a larger 6-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode)

An industry expert said, "As the market is divided into premium and low-end phone customers, which focus on premium phone users, manufacturers are also approaching the market with the latest technology in premium phones and diversifying mid- to low-end models."
