Green signals turned on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix as NAND flash prices continued to rise for 15 consecutive months. These companies are pushing for growth and are accelerating investment in capacity expansion one after another.

The price of 128Gb 16Gx8 MLC, a general purpose NAND flash for portable storage devices (USB), was USD 5.78, up 1.76% from the previous month, according to DRAMeXchange, a semiconductor e-commerce site. While NAND flash demand is growing, manufacturers are shifting their products from 2D (planar) to 3D (stereoscopic), resulting in lower prices and higher prices.

In the same period, the average fixed price of `DDR4 4Gb 512Mx8 2133MHz`, a general purpose product for PCs, remained at the same level as last month. This is because PC makers have completed contract price negotiations in the third quarter of Jul, as supply and demand for DRAMs became unstable.

Memory semiconductor prices continued to be strong in the third and fourth quarters. Samsung Electronics` semiconductor division and SK Hynix`s operating profit is expected to reach KRW 19 trillion and KRW 7.5 trillion in the second half, up 128.4% and 36.4%, respectively.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are pumping up capital to invest in semiconductors this year. Samsung Electronics is investing KRW 14.4 trillion and KRW 7.8 trillion in the Pyeongtaek plant and the Chinese cyan plant, which produce 3D NAND, respectively.

SK Hynix also started to operate the NAND production facility of Icheon M14, which has a monthly capacity of 50,000 units, from last month, and the completion of the NAND new facility M15 of the Cheongju factory has been advanced about one quarter earlier than originally planned.

A representative of DRAM Exchange stated, "Samsung Electronics will increase its DRAM production capacity of 17 lines of Hwaseong to 90,000 units per month by the end of this year, and SK Hynix will increase the wafer input capacity of the first floor of the Icheon M14 factory, which produces DRAM and increased it to ten thousand."
