Mobile-only video-on-air rates have attracted attention as video traffic has increased dramatically.

According to the industry on July 13, mobile video traffic is increasing by 50% each year. Video traffic is expected to account for more than 75% of mobile data traffic by 2022.

The growth of online video streaming service (OTT), social network service (SNS) and the use of videos embedded in web pages will accelerate the growth of video traffic.

The growth of overseas OTT companies such as YouTube and Netflix is a big part of video traffic growth. According to network equipment maker Ericsson, YouTube is dominating video traffic on most mobile networks. Currently, YouTube traffic accounts for 40% to 70% of total video traffic on major networks. The number of consumers who use YouTube every week reaches 70% of the world. Netflix has accounted for 10 to 20 percent of total mobile video traffic in some countries.

The Korean market situation is similar. The average monthly mobile data usage per person in Korea exceeded 6GB for the first time in April. The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, which is investigating monthly average data usage, said that the increase is evident over the past several years in conjunction with the expansion of mobile services such as video and instant messaging.

Major mobile operators offer services that provide video-specific data as video viewing increases. SK Telecom operates a tariff system that provides additional data for corn-specific OTT business operated by SK Broadband. It provides real-time TV streaming of corn, movies, entertainment, etc. as video-only data. LG U Plus has increased its video-only data benefits from 3GB to 4GB. The service has reached 10,000 subscribers within a month since its launch in April.

Kwak Dong-gyun, a researcher at the Institute of Information and Telecommunication Policy, explained, "When a mobile service provider provides video-only data to consumers, an environment is created to easily view the video regardless of the location or the device. It is also positive for the OTT market growth in the context of increasing video consumption and traffic." A representative of mobile operator said, "Currently, the video-only plan is an additional service or option, but as long as the video consumption increases, we are considering launching a dedicated plan or related service."
