`AI taxi` is expected to emerge as a competition point for Korean IT companies with Big Data in their hands.

According to the related industry sources on July 6, SK Telecom recently announced the review of the AI taxi business using telecom big data. Besides, it has experience in operation of taxi business, Naver, which provides taxi information service through partnership with public institutions based on extensive map data. It is expected that the Kakao, which has accumulated the related database (DB), will always join the `AI taxi` market.

SK Telecom, which accumulates 250 terabytes of communication data per day (TB, about 1 gigabyte, about 1000 gigabytes), has recently announced its strategy of developing its Big Data Hub as a base platform for related industries.

The company plans to launch its AI taxi app by combining its location-based Big Data with a taxi service. It is planning an AI taxi app that suggests the best recommended routes for taxi workers. AI analyzes SK Telecom`s Big Data to analyze the area, day of the week, weather, etc. where call-to-call demand is driven, and guides taxi drivers to locations with high probability of picking up customers based on the analysis results.

Naver, which has a large-scale own map database, will absorb the DB of external organizations providing the taxi information, and will provide AI taxi app service in such a way that AI is applied to it.

Currently, Naver is developing the map app as a lifelong platform by adding additional services such as navigation, accommodation, and reserving restaurants. It is a method to absorb the DB of affiliate start-up by map. Naver explains that it is not difficult to combine AI with these map app services. In particular, it is now able to access navigation, taxi, and transit information from the Maps app.

Naver representative said, "Although it is not a concrete plan, I think AI will be applied upon request for supplementary services in map apps as well as map apps in the future. Applying AI to taxi information service among supplementary services provides basic AI taxi service would be possible.¡± Currently, the Naver Map app provides automatic navigation and dispatching of taxis around the user, taxi driver information and vehicle movement information. If a driver presses the taxi button in the Naver Map application, the vehicle is connected to the nationwide taxi-integrated call center operated by the Korea Transportation Safety Corporation.

Meanwhile, Kakao is currently providing a function to recognize the voice of a user in a Kakao taxi and enter a destination. Once the development of the AI platform is completed in the third quarter, one of the services implemented within the platform will be able to enter the AI taxi service, the company said. Kakao Taxi is the most recognizable taxi calling app in Korea with a daily call volume of 1.5 million and cumulative users of 14 million.

Kakao representative said, "It is not a specific step, but once a user orders to call a taxi while using a Kakao service such as Kakao talk or Melon, the AI judges the optimal route and dispatch. It will be possible to have a service that will allow you to ride in."
