Domestic and foreign IT corporations are taking a step to make so called `Star AI developer` in order to become the leading company in this field as artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as the core technology of the fourth industrial revolution.
According to industry sources on July 3, Google, Apple and Facebook, as well as Korean companies such as Naver and Kakao are taking a strategy to promote star developers to lead AI technology. It is believed that it is effective to present the vision and direction of AI development with a star developer as the companies in each field raise the best AI manpower.
The global AI market is expected to reach KRW 2000 trillion by 2025 (IBM), and the AI industry is expected to reach USD 6.7 trillion (KRW 7688 trillion, McKinsey). This is the reason why major IT companies are stepping into this market. Especially, experts predict that companies which attract more talented people will win the market dominance.
Kim Jung-won, deputy head of the intelligence information society promotion team of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, said, "It is important to nurture and recruit global talent in order to secure AI technology. Recently, our company is actively engaged in recruiting AI talent. The government should also make improvement plan to secure talents.¡±
Most importantly, industry experts explain that it is up to the well-known developer to believe in the company which drives the best talent. One star developer acts as a `magnet` to attract talent. In fact, AI star developers are influential enough to affect the status of the company. In March, AI Authority official Andrew Ng revealed his resignation on his blog. Baidu shares in China, which was listed on the US stock market, fell about 3% in a few hours. Andrew Ng, head of Google Brain Teams, was head of the AI research center at Baidu.
Google applies the deep-minded founder of the AI Go program `Alpha Go`, Demis Hassabis and Deep Learning, to analyze and infer the data using artificial neural networks similar to the way the human brain processes information ) And Jeffrey Hinton, a professor at the University of Toronto, who invented the concept for the first time. Professor Hinton is a Google Scholar researcher and is working on Google AI research. Most of the AIs that are being developed and operated by Korean and foreign IT companies that have entered the AI market such as speech recognition, translation, and image recognition are based on the deep learning which Professor Hinton invented.
Facebook provided its AI laboratory to Professor Hinton¡¯s student, who is a student of the New York University, who was a student of machine learning (machine learning). After recruitment of Récun, Facebook showed `Deep Face` which recognizes person`s face photograph and who is who, and `M` which is virtual secretary service of Facebook Messenger. Meanwhile, Apple is promoting machine learning expert Ruslan Salakhutdinov Carnegie Mellon University as a leading AI developer and researcher.
In the case of Korea, Kim Joon-seok of Naver and Kim Nam-joo of Kakao are working as AI Star developers. Kim Jun-seok, a former graduate student at Pohang University of Science and Technology, is a speech recognition technology expert. LG Electronics has been working as a voice recognition developer for 8 years. In 2007, he joined Naver and developed speech recognition technology steadily. He is currently in charge of the artificial neural network translation technology, which is the core technology of the AI translation app.
Kakao, which is in the process of releasing the AI platform, is focusing on Kim Nam-joo`s overall work as a subsidiary of Kakao Brain. He started his career as a Kakao brain at the start of his graduate study, studying deep learning such as emotional chatbot, reinforcement learning, and GAN (non-intelligence learning techniques that gain knowledge from the data itself without correct answers). The GAN implementation code he developed was also featured on Yann Lecun¡¯s Facebook timeline. Currently, he is publishing articles in the Kakao AI Report, a monthly AI trend analysis report in Kakao, and is expanding contacts with those interested in AI. World developers are also participating as a mentor at `Machine Learning Camp Jeju 2017`, a joint development of machine learning technology.
