Naver is expected to compete with market leading Google & Apple in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

According to the industry on June 29, the patent technology of Xerox Research Center Europe (XRCE) acquired by Naver in recent years is largely overlapped with Google`s core AI technology and service utilization.

The patents which XRCE has acquired so far are owned by Xerox. However, Naver can also use the patents of XRCE. It can use XRCE patented technology as long as Naver has a license contract.

Once Naver completes the takeover of XRCE, the patents acquired by XRCE are attributed to Naver. The acquisition of XRCE is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year.

Naver representative said, ¡°Naver and XRCE have many technologies to be developed immediately.¡±

It is remarkable that the key AI technology patents owned by XRCE are closely related to that of Google & Apple. For this reason, there is a prospect that Naver, a native Internet company with XRCE in the industry, has not been able to play a front game in the global IT dinosaur Google & Apple and the global AI market.

The top AI technologies owned by XRCE are Machine Learning technology and self-driving technology.

Especially, it has XRCE, a handwriting recognition function by machine learning, which is a technology that Apple has released to developers after Google recently. XRCE`s handwriting recognition function is a technology which recognizes the handwritten notes (memo) noted on electronic paper documents and creates related links. This technology is similar to the technology introduced in iOS11, which Apple recently released as a developer version. Apple`s technology reads the handwriting and organizes text in the background.

The user is able to search for the handwritten notes through the search window. Machine learning technology can improve the recognition accuracy of handwriting.

Meanwhile, Google also has handwriting recognition technology. Google has applied machine learning technology to Android Wear 2.0, an OS for the wearable device.

Google last year introduced a technology which recognizes human handwriting and automatically converts it into text with machine learning from the Google developer conference I/O.

Naver will be able to compete with with Apple and Google once a service which combines XRCE`s handwriting recognition function and Naver`s search function is installed on the mobile platform.

In the case of autonomous driving technology, XRCE possesses a patent on ¡®autonomous parking¡¯, which autonomous driving vehicles should have as a necessity. Typical examples are: ¡âa technique of measuring the distance to an empty space around the self-driving vehicle itself, and ¡âa technique of grasping the parking environment through information obtained from a plurality of cameras installed in the parking lot.

Autonomous driving software technology, including autonomous parking, is currently AI technology which Google and Apple are developing intensively. It won 36 patents for the ¡®Project Titan` in March.

This includes a patent which allows the vehicle to recognize the driving environment by itself and to remove the driver`s blind spot by transmitting and receiving data between vehicles in real time. Google is working in this area to go beyond autonomous vehicles to `autonomous planes`.
