KakaoTalk, a mobile messenger operated by Kakao, has added an image search function, which is backfire to Naver, which has allegedly added a similar search function in the second half of this year.
The two portal operators are competing in the image search service in addition to the text search service.
According to industry sources, on June 27, Kakao added ¡®Similar Image Search¡¯, which allows its users to search for similar images in the case of sharing images in KakaoTalk via an update. This can be done by holding down the shared image in the KakaoTalk chat room and selecting `# Search`.
In the case of searching for scenery images, users can search for similar scenery images. People can also be searched with similar clothes or poses. The portal site operated by the Kakao shows the search results among the image data of the following.
The company said that it plans to introduce a function to search for similar products in the case of searching for future products. The service adds multimedia processing technology which extracts the characteristics of images and searches for similar images, Kakao said.
This is similar to the image search function that Naver is expected to release. The company plans to introduce a `shopping camera` feature this summer to find similar items on the Naver web and applications taken with cameras. The shopping camera is a function which extracts attribute values such as size, color, and pattern from product image and text information, and enables search by heel height and size. Image analysis and text mining (document search) technologies are used, the company said. The company has added a "similar style view" feature which allows users to find products similar in style to images selected in the current shopping space, the company added.
The company is expected to further add image searches across general themes in the second half of this year. The company said that it is researching and developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology which recognizes images and links them to searches from large data held by Naver.
An industry expert said, "The image search function to find similar images is a feature that Google introduced a few years ago. It will be important to see how accurate the search portal site`s services will become as they become more similar."
