Triangle production system of Ulsan, Xian and Hungary
[Digital Times, Park Seul-gee] Samsung SDI has completed the plant construction in Hungary and set up a production base in Europe for the first time in the battery industry. Samsung SDI, which has built a triangle battery for electric vehicles in Ulsan, Xian and Hungary, will be able to accelerate the electric vehicle battery business in China.
Samsung SDI has announced on May 30 that it held the ceremony for the completion of the electric vehicle battery factory in Göd, Hungary. About KRW 400 billion was invested in the existing PDP production plant and has a capacity of about 100 thousand pyeong (330 thousand §³). More than 150 people attended the ceremony, including Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban, President of Samsung SDI Jeon Yeong-hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Sjartor, and Ambassador Lim Geun-hyeong of Hungary.
Samsung SDI plans to build a battery supply system for electric vehicles for about 50,000 units at its Hungary plant and start mass production from the second quarter of next year. As a result, Samsung SDI secured an annual capacity of 150,000 units of electric vehicle batteries, including 60,000 units in Ulsan and 40,000 units in Xi¡¯an, based on pure electric vehicles.
Samsung SDI is expected to be able to improve efficiency in targeting the EV market by strengthening services for Volkswagen, BMW, Benz, and Audi, which have European production sites in Hungary, and reducing logistics costs. Especially, the European market is growing thanks to the eco-friendly policy and the battery market is also expanding.
Samsung SDI president Jeon Yeong-hyun stated, "The advanced technology will be applied to the battery made in the Hungary factory. We expect it will contribute to the development of the European electric vehicle market as a key part of the global automakers."
