Korean researchers have developed `3D wireless charging technology` which is able to charge multiple smart devices at the same time using magnetic resonance method.

Electronics and Telecommunication Institute (ETRI) revealed on May 25 that it has developed a cup holder type wireless charger (E-Cup, photo). E-Cup can charge a smartphone in any position or direction in a 10 cm diameter space.

ETRI has applied `uniform field generation technology` to maintain uniform magnetic field distribution in a specific space and `phase control technology` to charge a device regardless of position or direction. The researchers explained that this feature allows multiple smart devices to be charged simultaneously in a 10 cm diameter cup and maintains constant power charging efficiency in any direction.

The charging speed is the same as the wired charging. The charging efficiency reaches 60% of the wired charging. It is necessary to increase the charging efficiency to 70% and secure the technology to integrate the core technology into the chip to commercialize the 3-D wireless charging technology. The technology has been patented in the US, Europe and China and is planned to transfer technology to wireless charging companies.

The technology has attracted interest in the world`s largest electronics exhibition (CES 2017) held in Las Vegas in January. Recently the technology was selected as ¡®Best in Telecommunications and Broadcast R & D¡¯ by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.

Ph.D Cho In-gee said, "We will focus on developing technologies that can be wirelessly recharged in general living spaces such as living rooms through improving technology in the future."
