[Digital Times, Park Seul-gee] Samsung Display has unveiled the world`s first various directions stretchable Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) display.

Samsung Display announced on May 22 that the company will unveil its 9.1-inch two direction stretchable OLED display in ¡®Society for Information Display (SID) 2017` which will be held in Los Angeles Convention Center from May 23 to 25.

Existing flexible OLEDs can transform the screen only in one direction, such as bending or folding. However, stretchable OLEDs are capable of stretching the screen in more than one direction.

If we press the screen from the top, the screen will be dented like a rubber balloon and then flattened back to its original size. Conversely, if we press down from below, the screen rises to the top and is restored.

A Samsung Display representative said, "We have developed a stretchable technology that maintains the image quality even when the screen is stretched to a maximum depth of 12mm or when the display is pressed.¡± He also said, "There is no specific commercialization plan, such as when to mass produce the product." A thesis by Samsung Display Researcher Hong Jong-ho, who deals with this technology, was selected as the best thesis of this society.

Besides, Samsung Display is expected to launch products such as 5.09-inch glassless 3D OLED and 2250ppi (pixels per inch) class ultra-high resolution liquid crystal display (LCD).
