Microsoft`s (MS) Windows operating system (OS) market monopoly is the reason for the spread of the global Ransomware cyber attack that has been spread over the weekend.
The whole world is in an emergency with one so called WannaCry Ransomware. Ransomware, which exploited the MS OS `Windows` vulnerability, swept the world`s businesses, hospitals and public institutions in two days. According to Europol, a European Union (EU) police organization, 200,000 cases of Ransomeware cyber attacks have been reported in 150 countries around the world.
According to the analysis site `CVE Detail`, security vulnerability statistics on May 15, there are a total of 2,133 security vulnerabilities that have been detected since its launch in major operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. Although, the attack affected both Windows and new versions, the number of vulnerabilities in Windows XP, which was the most vulnerable to this attack, was 726, including the server OS.
It is an analysis that hackers have taken the vulnerability of Microsoft`s Windows operating system (OS) as a penetration route, contributing to the rapid spread. According to market researcher NetMarketShare, Windows accounted for 92% of the worldwide PC market in April. Cyber attack has infected the world without the time to respond to vulnerabilities of the operating system boasting an overwhelming share.
Lee Hee-joo, a professor of computer engineering at Korea University, said, "It is urgent to update the operating system that had been discontinued, such as Windows XP and 2003, in an urgent manner in three years. He also said, "With regard to the vendor`s update policy, the product suspension on previous versions may cause very serious problems.¡±
A total of 8 cases were filed by the Korea Internet Development Agency (KISA) until May 15, and the East Security Vaccine SW `Alyak` detected 2,000 WannaCry Ransomware cyber attacks.
Although Linux and Mac OS X have many security vulnerabilities, if the PC OS ecosystem was not an exclusive marketplace for Windows, it would not have been a massive damage at the same time.
A security industry expert said, "Linux and Mac OS did not cause any damage in this cyber attack, but in the past, hacking focused on promoting its reputation. The ecosystem is also a problem, but as we can see in this incident that it is impossible to respond with fast patches, so we need to make regular data backups. "
Kim Seung-joo, a professor of Information Security Graduate School at Korea University`s, explained, "This Ransomware cyber attack works in the form of worms (self-propagating malicious codes) and spreads itself exponentially." He also said, ¡°It is true that it is not good for the market dominated by single system but there is no product that can replace Windows in the market."
