Samsung Electronics is under a strategy to expand the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, which is one of the core technologies of the fourth industrial revolution era. The company has applied the artificial intelligence technology to the home appliances. The company entered into the artificial intelligent speaker market, after installing the `Bixby` speech recognition technology to the Galaxy S8 smartphone.
According to the industry sources on May 9, Samsung subsidiary, Harman Kardon has developed `Invoke`, an artificial intelligence speaker, by using Microsoft `s voice technology ¡®Cortana ` and is expected to launch it in the US this fall.
¡®Invoke¡¯ supports smart home features such as turning on lights under voice commands and is able to provide audio in 360 degrees. It features Microsoft`s Skype Internet phone service.
BGR-American IT channel mentioned, "Samsung has introduced a speaker based on Cortana by Harman Kardon, a subsidiary of Samsung, in a short time after Samsung launched the Bixby. Samsung is making big effort to compete with Amazon`s eco-speakers and Google`s home speakers.¡±
The industry expects the integration of Harman Kardon`s artificial intelligence speaker with Samsung`s mobile phone as Samsung`s basic strategy is to integrate all voice recognition functions with Bixby. Besides, Samsung is planning to build its own artificial intelligence ecosystem that is able to integrate smart phones, home appliances and self-driving cars, by focusing on Bixby. It means that the company is trying to differentiate itself from its competitors, which are in competition with Samsung for the initiative of the artificial intelligence market such as Apple and Google.
Currently global IT companies have entered the test phase to build an artificial intelligence ecosystem based on speakers. It is the industry analysis that it is knocking on the market in speakers before the full artificial intelligence application. Amazon is accounting for 70% of the market with the AI speaker `Echo` in which Alexa is applied, an artificial intelligence technology. Amazon is now to open the technology to expand coverage to household appliances and automobiles. Google also launched its artificial intelligence speaker `Home`, and Apple launched its artificial intelligence speakers with a built-in speaker, Siri.
Samsung Electronics is determined to be able to estimate the competitiveness of the future IT market in the artificial intelligence field. The company is expanding not only the smartphone, Galaxy S8 but also home appliances services as well. The company has introduced voice recognition technology for the first time this year and will expand it to other home appliances. Recently, the company has tested a self-driving car with an artificial intelligence sensor developed in-house. After acquisitions and mergers, the company tookover VIV Labs Inc, an artificial intelligence platform company last year. Especially, Samsung Electronics has decided to pursue the development of memory and system semiconductors for artificial intelligence computers, considering that artificial intelligence technology will have a positive effect on other businesses such as semiconductors in the future.
An industry expert said, "Although the Amazon is leading the artificial intelligence market, Google, Apple and Samsung are chasing the company. Speech recognition artificial intelligence technology is expanding to home appliances and automobiles and competition is accelerated to take the market. "
