It is intended to diversify the business structure of memory semiconductors, especially DRAM-based, and to increase the capacity of the overall semiconductor business.

According to the industry on April 26, SK Hynix announced on April 18 that the company had given a briefing to employees of its foundry division and decided to name the new subsidiary ¡®SK Hynix System IC¡¯ (tentative name).

The new company will provide foundry services using the 200mm wafer plant (M8) in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province. As of July 1, SK Hynix will form a wholly owned subsidiary through the board of directors. The number of employees is estimated to be about 1,000 people to work in related division.

SK Hynix made the same decision earlier this year and launched a Task Force (TF) to handle the work related to the foundry division.

The production capacity is 200,000 wafers per month based on 100,000 sheets. The main products are CMOS image sensor (CIS), display driver IC (DDI), and power management chip (PMIC).

An industry expert familiar with SK Hynix stated, "The Company has built an independent business that is well suited to foundry business by moving away from the existing memory-based business structure. It is more important to establish a specialized company for foundries than SK Hynix`s non-core division. New division is likely to be successful.¡±
