Mass production from next year¡¦.to be applied to next generation graphic card
[Digital Times, Park Seul-gee] SK Hynix has developed a next-generation graphics D RAM that is able to increase graphics processing speed to the world`s highest level while reducing power consumption. The D RAM is expected to be applied to next-generation high-end graphics cards to be released early next year.
SK Hynix has unveiled on April 23 that the company developed the world`s fastest GDDR6 graphic- D RAM.
It is a 20-nanometer 8Gb GDDR6, delivering industry-leading 16Gbps data throughput per pin. It is able to process up to 768GB of graphics data per second using 384 information input / output (I / O), which is widely used in high-end graphics cards.
SK Hynix plans to mass-produce products for next-generation high-end graphics card customers with high-performance graphics D RAMs in early next year.
A representative of SK Hynix said, "We are cooperating closely with major graphics chipset customers to mass-produce products at the time of full-scale market launch."
Graphics D RAM is a memory product specialized in processing video and graphics quickly by receiving commands from a graphics card in PCs, workstations, video players, and high-performance game machines.
GDDR6 is a next-generation high-performance graphic D RAM that is being standardized by JEDEC, an international semiconductor standard consultation organization.
It is twice as fast as the existing GDDR5 and has a 10% lower operating voltage.
SK Hynix expects to replace GDDR5 and GDDR5X, the market`s flagship products, from next year.
Oh Jong-hun, head of the DRAM design division at SK Hynix, said "By developing GDDR6, the next-generation graphics D RAM with the world`s fastest speed, we are able to meet the high-quality, high-performance graphics memory market and it will contribute to performance improvement."
