[Digital Times, Park Seul-gee] LG Display will start OLED major offensive in July this year. The will increase the production volume of TV OLEDs, which have already secured their leading positions in the world market and accelerate the popularization of OLED TVs, and enter the OLED market for smartphones. This is a strategy to become a leading company in OLED display.

According to LG Display on April 23, the company will start mass production of the 8th generation OLED production facility E4-2 at the P9 plant in Paju starting in July. This is a total of 26,000 sheets per month, plus the monthly production of 34,000 sheets of E3 and E4-1, the 8th generation OLED production facilities, to secure a total production capacity of 60,000 sheets per month. LG Display will be able to produce 1.5 to 1.8 million TV OLED panels on annual basis from 55 to 77 inches.

LG Display`s production of OLED TVs is expanding as the OLED TV has been growing rapidly. Sony, the world`s fifth-largest TV maker, is joining LG Display as a new customer this year. European TV companies such as Grundig and Loewe, Metz, and Vestel are also introducing LG Display`s OLED TVs. In particular, LG Display has achieved a golden yield of more than 80% in all large OLED models, making OLED business even faster.

At the same time, LG Display will deliver 6G OLEDs in July at the Gumi Plant E5. Flexible OLEDs produced in this factory will be available for smartphones such as Xiaomi and Huawei in China with a monthly capacity of 15,000 sheets. The company also plans to supply flexible OLEDs to LG Electronics, and the industry expects LG Electronics to adopt the panel in the V30 (tentative), a strategic smartphone launched in the second half of the year.

An LG representative said, "Both large-sized and small-sized OLED demand is quite large, so the company will rush as soon as they complete the set-up. We are preparing for mass production now."

In the OLED market, Samsung Display has focused on small and mid-sized smartphones, and LG Display has focused on TV-oriented large-sized markets. China BOE and China Star (CSOT) are in the midst of constructing 6G flexible OLED production facilities with enormous cost of CNY 100 billion and CNY 35 billion respectively.

According to market researcher IHS Markit, OLEDs for smartphones are expected to more than double from 120.9 million units last year to 203.9 million in 2020. In the same period, OLED for TVs is expected to grow more than quadruple from 311,000 units to 1.4 million units.
