LG Display is expected to supply nano-cell liquid crystal display (LCD) panels to Hong Kong TV manufacturer, TPV in the second half of this year. Following Skyworth and Conca, LG Display is planning to expand its nano-cell by continuously increasing its customer base in China, the world``s largest TV market. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics plans to expand its `QLED` LCD TVs mainly in China, so competition between premium TV standards is expected to heat up between two companies.

According to LG Display on April 10, the company plans to supply nano-cell LCD panels to TPV, a Hong Kong TV company, in the second half of this year, and is currently discussing the volume and timing of supply. Chinese TV makers Skyworth and Conca have already been mass producing nano-cell panels from LG Display. LG Display representative said, `We plan to supply TPV with nano-cell displays throughout the year. We are in talks with many Chinese companies, including Changhong, to supply nano-cells as major Chinese TV companies are targeting the premium TV market.`

TPV is ranked as the world``s sixth largest LCD TV market in the first quarter of the year, and fourth in the Chinese market (China + Hong Kong) based on shipment volume. TPV is believed to have formed a partnership with LG Display, which acquired Philips TV sector in 2011 and had a close relationship with Philips. The LG Philips LCD, the base of LG Display, was founded in 1999 by attracting USD 1.6 billion from Philips. LG Display has set the stage for leading the large LCD market.

Meanwhile, Samsung is fiercely competing to expand the quantum dot-based `QLED` to dominate the Chinese premium LCD TV market. Samsung Electronics is planning to explain the characteristics of QLED technology by participating in `QLED International Forum` held in Beijing, China on April 14, hosted by China Consumer Electronics Association. Chinese TV manufacturers, including TCL and Hisense, who are receiving Samsung`s Quantum Dot panels, are expected to attend. Samsung Electronics expects to be able to expand the QLED through the forum.

An expert in the display industry said, `Chinese TV makers mainly use Taiwanese display makers` panels for mid to low-priced models, but they are more favorable to enter into contracts when they build good relationships with Korean companies for premium models. It is important to expand the LCD premium as the market is big.`
