#AI composer that is able to compose one music in a minute has come out. It is not after long time that ¡®Quill¡¯, AI journalist, which is able to write one article in every 30 seconds, has been issue. Quill has been made by American Narrative Science and Forbes purchased this technology to release various articles. According to the science journal Science Daily, researchers at Osaka University``s Center for Industrial Science and Technology and the Tokyo Metropolitan University have developed AI headphones equipped with device that can measure user``s brain waves. When the user listens to a specific music, the device learns the changing EEG record and generates ``personalized music`` such as ``music that improves mood`` and ``music that calms the mood`` in one minute with only the user``s brain wave information.
Artificial intelligence machines already have various creative activities. It is expected that machines will be actively engaged in creative activities not only in articles and music, but in cultural contents such as movies, novels, and paintings in the future.
In the age of artificial intelligence, the copyright of the machine-created contents will be acknowledged to what extent, and the copyright of the artwork created purely by human beings will be protected differently from AI contents and the age of copyright dispute between human and AI is predicted. The controversy over copyright is expected to be heated up, and it is pointed out that it is urgent to newly establish the concept of copyright according to the age according to the emergence of a new AI creator.
According to a government representative on April 5, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plans to draft an amendment in October to enter into a copyright revision bill under the purpose of protecting the copyright of content created using AI from this month.
The Korean Copyright Commission under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recently selected the history of research for ¡®The research of copyright issues to cope with technological environment changes¡¯. The Korean Copyright Commission plans to research on classification of situations in which AI can create contents such as movies, music, and books for six months and copyright infringement problems that can occur in accumulating and collecting relevant data in order to utilize AI for content creation, the subject, the period of protection, and the application of penalties for copyright infringement.
One of the reasons for this research is that there is a possibility that the competition between the contents created by the machine itself and the contents created by humans will increase as the AI technology develops. It is difficult to cope with copyright protection for AI-produced content under current copyright law. The current copyright law defines copyright as an exclusive right given to a creature expressing human thoughts and feelings.
Experts point out that there should be a device that can minimize the limitations of human creative activities due to AI in an age that AI creative content is popular. There is no concept of ``death`` and it is necessary to revise the copyright law considering the characteristics of AI that learns data by oneself. There is also a claim that it is necessary to discriminate against AI``s copyrighted works that can pour a large amount of content in a short period of time, and copyright rules applied to human-created contents.
Professor Son Seung-woo of Law school at Dankook University stated, ¡®The duration of copyrights to AI creations needs to be set to a much shorter period than that of human creativity. The current copyright duration is protected for the author``s survival period and 70 years after the author death. If we think about creating a lot of creatures at a faster pace than other, we should set the protection period to be very short. We can see that the current copyright law stipulates the rights of database (DB) creator to be short-term in five years.¡¯
In addition, experts also point out that there is a need to look at international movements when preparing copyright protections for the AI era. As Korea``s AI technology is one step behind that of major countries such as the US and Japan, we need to carefully examine whether it is necessary to first make AI copyright protection regulations, since the AI content production will be in full swing.
Meanwhile, Japan published a report on copyright protection of AI creations in April last year, stating that AI creations should be handled differently from human creations. The copyright protection period should be shorter than the period of human rights protection (50 years after death) since AI will produce much more creations than humans. The European Union (EU) enacted the ``Robot Regulation Guidelines`` in 2014, which includes regulations and tasks for four areas: self driving cars, surgical robots, robotic artificial organizations and caring robots. It is necessary to protect the inventions and contents of robots with intellectual property rights such as patent rights, trademark rights, and copyrights.
