There is a growing trend among mobile carriers to take the leadership in the fifth generation (G) mobile communications. Cooperation between global mobile carriers is continuing to take advantage of the 5G technology standard from establishment to ecosystem building.

SK Telecom announced on April 3 that SK Telecom CEO, Park Jong-ho and CEO of Verizon Wireless, Lowell McAdam met at 5G Innovation Center of SK Telecom in Bundang, Gyeonggi-do to expand cooperation under 5G, Connected Car and Internet of Things (IoT) .

CEO Park and CEO McAdam have made agreement on the △ 5G technology standardization and △5G virtualization technology development cooperation, the 5G automobile association 5Ga (5G Automotive Association) solution joint development and standardization, and △the two companies`` own IoT platform, Business development etc.

The two companies are planning to jointly develop Vehicle to Everything (V2X) and telematics solutions (technology to exchange and share information such as road infrastructure, communication with other vehicles and traffic conditions) through 5GAA in the connected car field. It is planned to examine the test operation. The two companies will also consider whether IoT platform, media, artificial intelligence (AI) platform, etc. can be exchanged and shared.

CEO Park is expected to meet with CEO Timotheus Hoettges of Deutsche Telekom. CEO Park will discuss with Deutsche Telekom on △ 5G technical cooperation △ Joint business opportunities with connected cars △ Know-How share with AI and joint discover of new services.

CEO Park said, ‘By accelerating the standardization of 5G technology with global telecommunication companies and developing various services based on 5G, we will create a new ICT ecosystem.’

Meanwhile, Hwang Chang-gyu, CEO of KT, also met with CEO McAdam at KT Gwanghwamun building in Jongno-gu, Seoul to discuss 5G cooperation. The two companies demonstrated the world``s first real-time holographic video call through a global link to the 5G network. They successfully demonstrated a real-time hologram international video call by interlinking the 28GHz-based 5G communication network implemented in Seoul Gwanghwamun and Verizon Wireless Headquarters in New Jersey, USA.

KT explained that Verizon Wireless has consistently made 5G technical cooperation since last year. The two companies have been jointly establishing the ``5G Wireless Access Technology Standard`` since February last year, a core technology that defines interworking between terminals and base stations such as frequency and transmission method. The companies will soon complete hardware specifications and discuss software specifications. KT and Verizon Wireless have also agreed to cooperate on 5G commercial services. CEO Hwang mentioned, ‘Cooperation between global companies is very important since the commercialization of 5G in 2019 cannot be achieved with the power of a single company or a nation.
