PC and server dominating company, Intel to strengthen network market target.
According to Intel Korea on April 2, the company plans to install a solution that incorporates NFV (Network Functional Virtualization) and SDN (SW Definition Networking) technology in nationwide mobile service base stations under cooperation with domestic mobile carriers.
NFV is the virtual networking function of the server by eliminating the physical equipment of the network, and SDN is developing with the technology to manage the entire network connected by the SW. Nationally installed base stations for communication data processing are network transmission equipment, and performance and data rate processing are directly connected to network quality.
Objects linked with virtual reality (VR) contents, self-driving car navigation, AI, UHD broadcasting in the Internet of Things (IoT) environment, a 5G network that is ten times faster than the existing 4G is essential for stable and fast data processing. However, NFV • SDN technology, which can manage network traffic efficiently, is required due to limitations of existing base station architecture. Especially, all of the peer-to-peer networks have a long latency to reach users via the IDC network, and Intel is spreading and integrating NFV technology at each base station.
Hong Hee-seok, SDN / NFV Product Marketing Manager, Intel Korea, explained, ¡®Not only smartphones but also various devices and objects are connected to the network. The self-driving car, for example, can cause a malfunction in the case of network process is delayed. In fact, processing all the data is needed for 5G in the core network may cause high cost and less flexibility.¡¯
Intel plans to launch the Xeon D-1500, an optimized process for intelligent open network edge, to streamline network systems from IDC to base stations for 5G traffic processing and to efficiently process data from location-based services and content. ¡®Atom C-3000¡¯ will be developed and distributed within this year. Also, the company is developing an open networking platform to build a collaborative ecosystem by utilizing the open source project ``Data Plane Development Tool (DPDK)`` to create a collaborative ecosystem with network manufacturers that have built their own processes.
Manager Hong pointed out, ¡®Intel has more than 90% market share in the server process market, and the fast-growing field will focus on developing related technologies in the network market. It is not just a CPU but also Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Solid State Drives (SSDs) to maximize compatibility and pave the way for network innovation from IDC to endpoints.¡¯
