Next-generation Intelligent Transportation System- Cooperative Intelligent Transport System (C-ITS) is becoming increasingly sophisticated. The technology has evolved to the point where vehicles and roads exchange real-time traffic information, prevent accidents by coping with emergency situations while driving, and identify pedestrians crossing intersections wearing black clothes at night. However, communication error that occurs during driving is considered as a problem to be solved.
The Korea Expressway Corporation has demonstrated service for 38 km of 87.8 km of Daejeon-Sejong C-ITS demonstration zone near Sejong city on March 21. In addition to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Expressway Corporation, Transport and Maritime Affairs, 30 companies and organizations have also participated in the C-ITS Public-Private Partnership Forum.
In this section, an unexpected condition sensor, a pedestrian sensor, and a traffic signal control device were installed. The road construction showed a total of 17 C-ITS applications.
The first thing which has been witnessed on the big bus was a large monitor. A map such as a navigation screen is displayed on the left side of the screen and a real driving road image is shown on the right side in real time. In addition to the situation on the map, the driving speed is displayed in real time. The real time road situation is transmitted to the driver through the smart phone or the vehicle terminal, when it is put to practical use. The monitor also provided information on dangerous sections on the road, road surface conditions, weather information and other information to prevent traffic accidents.
The demonstration bus left from the second parking lot of Sejong Government building and passed West Sejong IC (9.2§°), South Sejong IC (16.3§°) from West Sejong, Sejong Bus Terminal (5.1§°) from South Sejong IC. The bus ran for about an hour to the parking lot (7.4§°).
The most striking part of the demonstration was the intersection signal warning service and the intersection pedestrian detection service. The service has recently been added and the intersection signaling violation alert is achieved through communication between the vehicle and the infrastructure. This method provides traffic light information to the in-car display device in real time for the vehicles in the intersection. Green signal only provides information about 3 seconds before change to red in order to prevent a car over speed and to respond to red signal change. Also, after changing to red to prevent predicted start, the remaining time is displayed for 5 seconds. Currently, Sejong City provides this traffic signal information to car terminals at four major intersections and eight locations in Daejeon.
A pedestrian sensor installed at the intersection was used to detect pedestrians on the pedestrian crossing a crosswalk and a warning service was provided to the driver in advance. It is a technology to detect a pedestrian or a bicycle by real-time analysis of a moving picture pattern photographed by a camera installed on a roadside support. Pedestrians wearing black clothes can be detected at night if there is a street light installed on a pedestrian crossing.
In addition, the C-ITS service was also excellent in response to road emergency situations. However, communication errors during driving were considered as a problem to be solved. The demonstration bus monitor has an indicated 590 km / h due to GPS (Satellite Positioning System) error. It is said that the accuracy of positioning technology is important for communication between car and car.
Professor Chun In-ho of Korea National Transportation University attended the demonstration and said, ¡®There are many services that provide communication between a car and infrastructure, but the service to communicate between a car and car seems to be insufficient yet. Positioning technology is important for service between a car and car. I think more research is needed on this issue¡¯.
Chun In-ho, Next Generation Business Team Leader, Smart Highway Project department od Korea Highway Corporation said ¡®We have recently organized the C-ITS Public-Private Partnership Forum, which is composed of a government, research institute, automobile company, and ICT company, which has participated in the C-ITS Public-Private Partnership Forum and it will improve the completeness of C-ITS service.¡¯
