Open SW market is ¡®Blue ocean¡¯¡¦ Sustainable growth 13.6% last year

The market for open source software that anyone can use by releasing development source code is growing.
According to the SW portal of the National IT Industry Promotion Agency on March 20, last year, the size of the open software market increased by 13.6% compared to the previous year (KRW 141 billion) to KRW 160.2 billion. The open SW has been growing steadily as utilization in the new industries such as cloud and big data have increased.
According to NIPA, the open software market is a promising software field with an annual average growth of 15.2% from KRW 201 billion in 2015 to KRW 286.2 billion in 2020. The market size is expected to reach over KRW 180 billion this year. Open SW is economical efficiency, such as server introduction and reduction of maintenance cost, and reduction of development input cost such as time and manpower by using open SW when developing solution. Besides, Open SW gives the opportunity to select various SWs for consumers, thereby stimulating the market competition, giving the opportunity to escape the dependency on the foreign commercial SW, technological innovation, and training manpower. Open SW is applied to all of the domestic mobile messenger such as ``KakaoTalk`` and Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs¡¯ ¡®E-government standard framework¡¯, open cloud platform`` pasta 2.0 ``, SW education platform`` Naver entry ``, discount product of Wemakeprice –¡®Hot deal¡¯. Open SW is applied to all these services and can be one of the successful cases of open SW. The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning has established the ``Open SW Capacity Plaza`` to create open SW demand and to form an industrial ecosystem, and to spread the use of open SW, establish model, and provide knowledge information. The ministry is also working on training of talented open SW developers through various support measures such as on-line and off-line training courses, development support, and international cooperation.
A representative of SW industry said, ¡®This year, we will reduce the portion of foreign commercial SW in the business of converting government integrated computing center to cloud center, and it is expected to reduce operating cost through converting to open SW. Currently, we are doing various support projects to bring various services and community based on open SW.¡¯
