Digital forensic software (SW), which collects and analyzes digital information remaining in storage media such as computers, smart phones, memory cards, and the Internet as well as criminal evidence, is becoming more popular and the government¡¯s digital forensic is also to be introduced soon.
According to the SW industry on March 15, the government and public institutions are pushing for the introduction of digital forensics within this month. The first thing is that prior to the presidential election, the Central Election Commission on Cyber Election Crime Response Center is working on updating the existing equipment and software to the latest version. Maintenance, technical support and training for forensic HW and SW are strengthened in order to acquire evidence related to crime such as dissemination of false information related to election in cyber space. Also, a business developing a mobile forensic system is in full swing in order to effectively control and prevent election crime using a smart phone and to provide a rapid support system to the investigation site.
On the other hand, the Financial Services Commission, which is in charge of financial policy and supervision, decided to introduce digital forensic software and equipment to the newly established capital market research team to establish an infrastructure for investigation of unfair financial transactions. Unfair trading practices such as stocks manipulation in stock markets such as stocks and futures are evolving and the commission decided to use forensics to prevent those crimes under the development of ICT technology. The commission will build a digital forensic system to extract and recover deleted messages and call history from smartphone to identify criminal charges and use them as decisive evidence.
The Digital Forensics Center of the National Police Agency Cyber Security Bureau will operate a project to establish a dedicated broadband communication network that connects the central government office and 17 provincial offices and the Supreme Prosecutors`` Office to digital forensics for more efficient investigation and data transmission in response to an increase of cyber crime. The center plans to implement stable and reliable digital forensic infrastructure by strengthening the broadband and security of cyber environment through this plan. Besides, the court is also working to increase the credibility of forensic programs and build a forensic system against malicious code threats so that they can be recognized as digital evidence.
In addition, Seoul Metropolitan Police Judicial Police will set up a digital forensic system for the first time among local governments to secure digital evidence to prove allegations of criminal charges against lenders, visiting sales, false signs of origin, and fake petroleum distribution. SW industry representative said, ¡®The central government and agencies are actively using digital forensics to prove charges, as the crime increases through smartphones and the Internet¡¯.
