A government project for the development of a ``quantum computer`` is about to start.

According to Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning on March 9, the Ministry is conducting a preliminary feasibility study for the development and commercialization of quantum computer technology. According to the results of the feasibility study, the Ministry for the Future plans to set a budget in consultation with the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, and has set a goal of starting this project as a medium and long term project from next year.

Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning has jointly worked with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Defense, and the National Intelligence Service to try out mid- to long-term strategies for the development of bilateral information and communications in 2014, but it was canceled due to budget issues. Now, the project is to be promoted exclusively by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. According to Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, if the project at the time was focused on the field of quantum application technology, this project will include development of the original technology field along with the application field.

The first vise minister of Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning-Convergence technology department and the second vice minister of Information and Communication Broadcasting Technology Policy Division, will jointly conduct business. The convergence technology department is responsible for the basic areas such as device development and the information and communication technology policy department is the application area that can be applied directly to communication and security by utilizing the quantum technology. A representative of Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said, ¡®Future technology is developing at a rapid pace due to environmental changes in the IT ecosystem, and we are rapidly researching and developing in overseas under the analysis that we need a quantum computer to flexibly adapt to the industry environment change.

Worldwide IT companies such as Google, Microsoft, IBM and Intel are working to commercialize quantum computers. This is because it can make dramatic progress in advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and security by utilizing quantum information and communication technology. Google and IBM are planning to develop quantum computers, which are currently several qubits in size, with performance over 50 qubits in a few years, and recently, Microsoft has also been spurring the development of quantum computers by recruiting a large number of related researchers.

Quantum computers, on the other hand, are futuristic computers that use quantum mechanics principles. It is known that instead of the binary method, a quantum bit called a qubit, which is able to finish an existing computer in 1000 and a current supercomputer in 150 minutes in just 4 minutes. According to the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the domestic quantum computer technology is less than half of that of advanced countries, and the technology gap is 7.6 years.
