Successful SNS businesses which succeeded with photo contents have been wide such as Instagram, Flickr, Dish Inside, Facebook etc. However, the business model of photography has not yet been completed. Local start-up- Originpics (CEO- Lee Dong Hoon, photo) created a platform for smartphone users to make money with their photos. Interesting point is to secure the copyright of photographs and images that have been losing their origins based on SNS, and to act as a revenue window for photo source holders.
Originpics allows users of 3.5 billion smartphones around the world to obtain copyrights based on the app that cannot be forged with. Companies, organizations, and individuals who need photos, including 70,000 media around the world (about 6,000 in Korea), have not been able to freely use and purchase photos on SNS so far. This is because it is difficult to check the copyright, and it is impossible to know the operation and authenticity. The reason is that not only it was impossible to know the photo authenticity but also it takes from ten minutes up to hours to identify the fact and there is a reason why the value of media is breaking down.
Originpics has developed and patented a technology that solves above problems. It means that order has been established in the photo distribution market. It is the only model in the world. Let us take a picture of a plane crash in Taipei, Taiwan on February 6, 2015, at 4:21 pm as an example. This photo was taken on a smartphone from a car that was driving on the highway, and the photo had a tremendous report value on the scene. At that time, a broadcaster in Taipei broadcasted this screen a few minutes later, and it was followed by global news agencies. The news was on the internet almost simultaneously. However, it was not known whether the photographer enforced authority on the copyright of the photograph. If this photographer had been aware of the copyright of the photo and had obtained the authenticity of the photograph from a third party, he would have earned a considerable income if he could immediately report it to TV broadcasters, news agencies and newspaper companies.
Originpics has developed a solution that is able to systematically capture the copyright and authenticity of this photo and transfer it to the media at the same time as taking a photo. The real-time content sharing system, which is a patented technology of Originpics, is supplied to smartphone users as an app. For example, when an app user takes a picture through this app, the GPS position information, time, temperature and humidity, the field sound data of about 5 to 10 seconds along with the shooting azimuth angle is recorded by the tagging method and is sent to the server of Originpics- ¡®Quick report¡¯ immediately. And the forgery and falsification of the photographic content is fundamentally blocked through this process. Immediately after transmission, the sender may transmit factual information as text. The photo content, which is sent to the server is automatically classified and transmitted to the company, such as the contracted media, immediately. This process is completed within 30 seconds to 55 seconds.
CEO of Originpics- Lee Dong Hoon said, ¡®Originpic``s Global Smart Network (GSN) distinguishes itself by its reliability, speed, and broad network that cannot be forged.¡¯ "It``s a platform that phone users can shoot and spread to the world in tens of seconds."
CEO Mr. Lee mentioned, ¡®More than 10% of ordinary media reports are attributed to the general public. Especially, the higher the field means the higher the percentage of the general public contribution. There are not only unfortunate events but also many happy events as well in our daily life and we plan to distribute the Originals GSN to people all over the world. ¡®
As Originpics``s unique news network is known overseas, the subsidiary of Canadian state-run broadcaster CBC is currently under discussion with Originpics as it is planning to open agencies in North America including Canada. On the other hand, cooperation is being discussed with several economic newspapers in Korea.
The Originpics GSN pays commission to a reporter for 40% of the content sale price. The content sales price starts from KRW 50,000, depending on the popularity, the content quality. If demand is high from the media around the world, prices may go down. According to Originpics, photographic market of the domestic media industry is to be at least KRW 200 billion and the global market at around KRW 5 trillion. If the Originpics GSN is activated and the number of app users reaches 1 million, the app will overwhelm the world``s photo journalists and the proportion of photo image distribution will increase.
CEO Mr. Lee stated, ¡®A few years ago, when a Asiana Airlines landed at an airport in San Francisco, an executive director of one company took a picture of the scene and posted it on his Twitter, and all of the world``s media companies have used the photo without any copyright. The photo copyright value would be equal to KW 1 billion, only if the copyright had been applied to the photo¡¯.
However, Mr. Lee says that the Originpics GSN is not just about working on photography for copyright purposes. Originpics can play a role in spreading authentic pictures with the Origin Fix app in the case of the old media avoids reporting any particular event for political reasons. It can contribute to help the structure and creating a transparent society by sharing real-time disaster and corruption scene in real time. The Originpics app is available for immediate download from Google Play Store and iOS for any smartphones including OS, iOS and Chinese smartphones, including the.
