Premium smartphone competition is visible now in the first half of this year. G6 of LG Electronics has already started presale and the Samsung Galaxy S8 is also going to be on display at the end of this month. There has been growing interest in premium phone recently, and those new smartphones will encourage the mobile market, which has been quiet for a while, rather than ``special`` in the admission or graduation season.
According to LG Electronics on March 6, the G6, which has launched presale on March 2, has exceeded 40,000 units in four days. This quantity is more than twice the industry¡¯s initial estimate of 20,000 units. The company explained that, even on dealers¡¯ day, an average of 10,000 bookings per day has been arranged.
The G6, which has been unveiled in Barcelona, Spain on February 26, is the first premium smartphone on the market. After last year``s Galaxy Note 7 discontinuance, LG Electronics has taken a step ahead of the mobile phone market, in so called ¡®ownerless mountain¡¯, and has begun to absorb demand for premium phones. The G6 will cost KRW 899,800, and will be officially launched on the March 10. It is expected that the company will concentrate its marketing efforts to enjoy the preemption effect as much as the company launches about a month earlier than the Galaxy S8.
Mobile-service companies, which have been forced to concentrate on mid to low-priced phones in the meantime, are also focusing on raising subscription rates and real purchasing rates. LG U + KRW 150,000, KT KRW 150,000 and SK Telecom are KRW 124,000 and are listed on the basis of the largest 60,000 won rate plan. In addition, LG U plus will also launch its purchase support program ``R Club 2`` on the March 10, the same day of the G6 launch day.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 is also expected to be launched following the G6. The Galaxy S8 is scheduled to be launched in the US and UK on the March 29 of this year. Samsung Galaxy S8 is the first premium product Samsung Electronics has released since the Galaxy Note 7 discontinuance. Samsung Electronics launched the Galaxy S8 prototype unofficially to its global partners during the Mobile World Congress (MWC), which was held from February 27 to March 2, and it has been known that the phone has gained a good comments. Galaxy S8 is expected to be on presale on April 10 and will officially be launched on April 21.
Recently, the mobile number transfer market has been struggling. According to the Korea Telecom Operators Association (KTOA), the number of total number of transfers last month was 49069 (excluding the number of mobile phones included), which was 4.5 % higher than January``s 513,345, and up 11.4 % from February last year. Galaxy Note 7 has fallen below the 500,000 level again after 469, 9045 cases last September, after Galaxy Note 7 explosion.
Kim Jang Won, a researcher of IBK Investment & Securities, mentioned, ¡®Due to the launch of a new smartphone model, the industry expects most of the subscribers to transfer numbers and devices within April ~ May. We expect the number of users who want to buy and sell products to be larger and the impact of new models will be greater in April than in March.¡¯
